We had another one of "those" unusual vehicles in today,it failed on headlamp aim and a rear light not working.Simple you think, just a tweek of the headlamp adjusters and a new bulb and it's fixed. Huh,no such luck, this is a Volkswagen Phaeton,a £70,000 car with the same underpinnings as the later Bentleys. For a start it had water ingress into the back lamp, this is a highly complicated LED type lamp and the printed circuits have corroded badly,£249.00 for the lamp plus labour for configuring and fitting plus vat.The headlamps are adjustable through the body control module and our computor won't talk to them,we may have to buy new headlamps at £529.00 plus configuring and fitting plus vat each(This does not include the gas units{bulb}@ £149.00 each).Try running one of these babys on a shoestring budget!!!
Oh,by the way,the rear lamp is on back order,so it's not fixed yet!!

New rear lamp duly fitted, had to get a diagnostic guy in to adjust the headlamps though. He had the full VAG diagnostics and he had to tell the computor to stick out the headlamp washers and the manual adjusters were behind them........where else??????????????!!!!!!!!!!! Got it at home tonight, testing out the headlamps,or candles as they appear to be.Large Passat with posh bits, who would be mad enough to buy one new?? Still,it's now legal and got an Mot.

Hmmm.....on a similar vien

When I took my driving test (many moons ago) I was told not to slow down using the gears.....as it was cheaper to replace the brakes pads (and discs) rather than the clutch.

Pads and Discs have become disposable items.

Unfortunately, the French Manufacturers have decided different.... on the Renault (Scenic) the rear discs feature bearings and abs ring......and I'm still trying to fathom how to disengage the automatic handbrake !

The dealer offered to do it.....when he gave me the price ......I had to ask whether it was a quote for the job or a part-exchange offer for the car !

I would be frightened to ask the cost of a replacement clutch.

Disconnecting the electronic handbrake is relatively easy, there is an emergency release inside the spare wheel well, getting it working again, now that's a different story!!We have just had one fitted, and as it is a programmable unit it has to be fitted and programmed by the Renault dealers(this unit had burnt out internally).
Just to continue with the woes of the Phaeton,in my last comments about the candle type headlamps, each lamp consists of a headlamp unit with igniter unit, gas discharge bulbs and a control unit, each headlamp therefore costs.......£1006.42 each!! Thank the Lord for the Scamp!!!!

Are they programmable computor based units, antiques,or gold plated with whisltes & bells Jono?
I thought of adapting some nice 7" Lucas sealed beam units in the Phaeton but the customer didn't seem too impressed!!

Going back to the Renault handbrake,if you are just changing the pads/discs,pull the lever on the dash and press the button in.Remove both callipers and the pistons wind back so idealy you require a piston wind back tool,on some of the Renaults the nearside piston is lefthand thread, not sure on the Scenic though,
you will soon tell if it doesn't wind back.
