Thanks folks.
I think it might be a pipe dream at the mo - especially with Nic off to uni in Sept Exclamation Exclamation
At least we know its possible if he ever really wants to save his pocket money.
I think there are more important things to buy for Taz at the moment.
Like insurance and a tax disc for a start!
Thanks for the info anyway.

If it's on a "Q" that's what you're stuck with. Try an insurance company that deal with kit cars specifically. They understand this sort of thing.

I think you are correct there Jono. If memory serves me it should even say on the V5 that the registration mark is non transferable. But specialist kit car insurers are very used to Q plates and also restricted mileage.

Thanks Guys and Gals .Jono I already have insurance with a Q plate insurer , I want to re register on a age related plate, which is a plate that I believe is no longer in circulation ,and is about the same age as my vehicle IE 1985 .
The wording on the V5 reg doc is
This registration mark cannot be transfered to another vehicle, It does not say that another reg cannot be transfered to this vehicle.

Again Thank You all

I don't get the feeling that being on a 'Q' plate makes any difference to the insurance. Our two Scamps - one on a 'Q' plate the other on a regular plate, cost the same to insure. Most insurers won't look at either of them - because they are kit cars - not because of their reg. I may be wrong, but that is our experience over the last couple of years.

You are quite right in that it says 'Non Transferable' and that you cannot transfer the registration mark to another vehicle, but does that also mean you can ditch it and replace it with an alternative registration mark? Personnally I think it means that you cannot change the registration mark of the vehicle at all. I seem to remember seeing vehicles with an historic reg having the same restriction.

The only option left to you then Woody is to contact DVLA and see how they interpret their own rules.

Once you're "Q" plated.. unless a mistake was made at the time of registration and you appeal straight away... you are "Q" plated for life... Very Happy Unless you re-build the vehicle and have it re-tested... but I'm sure you don't want to go down the SVA/IVA route No
