Registration questions
Hi All,
I am a previous Scamp owner and club member from about 10 years ago when I sold my Mk2. I have been missing it more recently and looking to buy another one as the chap I sold mine to all that time ago is too fond of it and won't sell it back.
Anyway, I have seen a few for sale, lost an auction for one and now looking at another which is a Mk2 but I'm not sure that its registered correctly so I'm after some advice on what to do.
It seems that it has retained the chassis number from the original donor car. When I run a quick check on the reg SNV279G it shows it as a 1969 Austin Mini 850 Saloon in Blue whereas it is actually a Yellow Scamp Mk2 with a 1275 engine!
I am quite keen on it apart from this so my question is: can this be fixed via the DVLA somehow or will they claim that it is no longer allowed on the road? It seems like the existing owner has owned it for around 2 years and it has current Tax/MOT/insurance so he has had no problems with this.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
Cheers,
Matt

Re: Registration questions
The problem is that to be registered as a Scamp, the car must have been built before the tightened SVA rules were introduced in, IIRC, 1998. Proving this could be a problem if the registration details haven't been updated. It would have been possible - although illegal - to continue to tax and insure the car as a Mini, but for MoTs the car has to match the details on the V5. The days when the test covered only Construction and Use requirements (e.g. number plate lamps, required under licensing laws, weren't originally included) are long gone.
Also, for the Scamp to retain the donor's number, it must have been built before 1983, when the Q prefix was introduced.
The bottom line is what is on the actual V5. Colour & engine size aren't important, what matters is that it contains the phrase "rebuilt from parts" or words to that effect. If it doesn't, you will have problems. Any documents - MoT certificates in particular - describing the car as a Scamp may be a help.
Good luck!

Re: Registration questions
Many thanks for the advice. I have asked the seller to let me know the full details as he has been vague about the V5 so far. Its a long way for me to travel to see it only to find out that it is not registered correctly as I don't really want to have to deal with sorting it out via the DLVA.
Thanks,
Matt

Re: Registration questions
Where is it? There might be someone on here (or the Facebook page) who is near by that could go take a look for you. Also worth asking the seller if he has any other documents or pictures for the car. Just as I was about to leave to head home when I bought my MK2 the seller suddenly remembered he had a folder for the car in the garage. Turned out to be pages and pages of info the original builder of the car had put together. Something like that would provide evidence for the DVLA that the car has been a Scamp for a long time.

Re: Registration questions
It's in Kilmarnock if there is anyone locally.
If I can't get any evidence of the V5 being correct, I will probably wait for another to come up for sale
