Does anyone have any more detailed info about how Scamps were first registered ? I am particularly interested in those built in the early 80's.

Things used to be very ad-hoc with regards registering new build kits back in the day.

Some offices were happy to use the manufacturer issue chassis number and others insisted on having to use a DVLA issued one.

From what I have read Mk2's can either have a riveted on alloy plate or a number welded on the chassis. I can't find a riveted on plate on mine anywhere and it doesn't have the bit of tube the numbers were welded onto as it's an early chassis.

Once Andy took over production of the MK2 circa 1987 (and later the Mk3's) he welded the chassis number onto the inside of the front frame. I have had both a SWB SIXWHEELER (special chassis option) and the more common 4 wheeled Short Wheel Base (SWB) MK 3 and Oh yes also the 4th pro-type Mk3.

They all had the chassis number welded onto the top/rear of the front frame (inside the engine bay) following the format Mk3rob mentioned.

Is there any way to verify the logbook matches the vehicle without having a number on the chassis ? Perhaps the DVLA could help ?

Asking DVLA about any thing like that could really open a can of worms and screw up a few people.

Your number is what is on the V5 ............... accept it.

Thanks Rob, not something I really want to get involved with doing, I just don't want to get caught out later on with an incorrectly registered car.

Seconded.

I had a Scamp that I tried to get DVLA to change the body type from Pick Up to Utility - Have done it in the past with no problem at all.

Imagine my horror when a letter dropped through the door from DVLA asking what I had done to the car to change the body type. It would also have to be inspected, of course, for reasons only known to them.

After ringing DVLA to try and explain that it had never had the body type correctly done when one of their numpty inspectors issued all the necessary paperwork and it's original V5 I was convinced that I would never see this V5 again without a fight.

I was massively relieved to have the V5 drop back though my door an week or so later totally unchanged.

Applying for the history from DVLA via V888 is pretty low risk and should provide you with copies of all the registration documents so you can see what numbers there are.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/v888-request-by-an-individual-for-information-about-a-vehicle

BTW my MK2 (supplied by Andrew) just has a strip of metal with a series of letters and numbers hand stamped on it for a chassis plate, IIRC it's the VIN from the donor car. The GT3 has the welded number on the front chassis member.
