Scamp Engine Replacement 1.3i
Hi, I bought a scamp last year and the engine and box had been left upside down in a farmyard making them worthless. I have been offered a 1.3i engine and box, does anyone have any experience fittining these.
It is from a mini that has been scrapped because of the scrappage scheme. So I am able to buy the complete front half of the car which will give me all the wiring, front suspension, front disc brakes etc. it looks like it will fit quite easily and we are good at welding etc, just a bit worried about the wiring will this be a pain I am hoping we will be able to strip the wiring carefully and put it in the scamp.
Will we need to keep a cat converter or can we do away with this.
Any help would be appreciated, I am hoping to get the scamp on the road for the summer so I need to get on with it now.
Thanks Mark

Re: Scamp Engine Replacement 1.3i
Hi Mark,
If you really do have a complete donor front half, it should be a doddle as the main job will be just to transfer the front subframe and everything on it. If old and new subframes have different (one vs. two bolt) mountings, this will complicate matters a bit but I think this has been discussed in another thread.
The wiring shouldn't be difficult. Mini looms are split into separate front and rear assemblies plugging together at the back of the engine compartment, so unless it was taken apart in too much of a hurry, your half mini should contain a complete front loom. Depending on the relative ages of this and the rear loom in your Scamp, there may be non-mating connectors to change, or slightly different colour codes to match up. Also depending on how your lights and instrument panel are laid out, a modicum of dissection and re-binding may be needed for a perfect fit.
Do PM me if you have any problems - me : electrics :: duck : water.

Re: Scamp Engine Replacement 1.3i
Thanks, the mini is still complete so we are going to cut it in half just behind the gearlever linkage. Its a real shame because the mini is quite a good one but because of the scrappage scheme it has to be cut up.
Good to know about the wiring before we cut the mini in half. We will be able to sort the lights out quite easily but it is the ECU etc I am worried about.
Will we need the cat converter to get the engine running properly, or can this be done away with???
Thanks
Mark

Re: Scamp Engine Replacement 1.3i
You may have to modify your fuel tank because I think the injection setup requires a return to the tank and also the fuel pump is next to the tank and not the one on the back of the engine!!
Be easy to check on the current car !

Re: Scamp Engine Replacement 1.3i
If the management system is o.k. it should bring the CO emmisions down to around 0.5%. The catalytic convertor will bring it down to 0.3% - 0% so,you would not realy need the catalytic convertor on an older car. The only thing you would need is the oxygen sensor which should be in the pipe before the cat,as this and the air flow meter or map sensor are the main things that control the mixture. The earlier injection A series engine were single point injection and the later ones had 2 injectors. And as said in the previous link, it would need a return to the tank. Hope this is of some help.

Re: Scamp Engine Replacement 1.3i
Thanks for all the help, I now have the front half of the mini sat on the bench in the workshop. It is a multi point fuel intection engine from a late mini, A Real shame it was scrapped not much rust and in OK condition.
We are tidying up the wiring and are trying to start the engine before we remove it from what is left of the body.
I will try and post some pictures tomorrow of the engine and our scamp.
The back half is still at the scrap yard if you want to make a trailer, I did cut it in half with a felling axe so some bodywork may be needed.

Re: Scamp Engine Replacement 1.3i
I have been busy at work however we have had to conceed defeat with the fuel injected engine we had, we where missing the RFD chip and there didn't seem to be anyway past the immobiliser, our back up plan was always to fit a distrubuter and a carb but it seems that is not possibly with the multi point fuel injection just the single point. Anyway you live and learn, the half a mini sold on ebay in 10 mins for what we paid for it.
Any one got any metros or engines boxes etc we could use for a donor. Must be a plain old carb unit had enough of hi tech stuff this week.

Don't even think of putting that idea into his head....
Although, he says the monster 160 brake horse power Scamp isn't fast enough, maybe he should go for brake cow power when he puts the Audi Turdbo in it?
