Engine Changes ? Empty Engine Changes ?

Post  nhazelwood Fri Jan 23, 2009 12:02 am

Hi folks,

Now little 'Walle' is getting a little bit more developed... New wiring loom, new front panel & grill, stage 1 of rollbar mod's carried out, roof partially made, general sealing underway....

I've got to decide what to do with the little scamps engine.....It's fubar.

My 1st option has already been discounted due to insufficient funds. (unless anyone has a porsche cayenne on their drive for spares !!).

So, do i stay with the A series with crappy gearbox, or convert for more power. I intend to use walle for my weekly commute (60miles a day), so i'm after something reliable & economical, but with enough grunt to seriously embarass the local MaxPower posse. (I may be getting older but i haven't grown up yet)

Simple question then, apart from ford engines, which is one of the easiest engine conversions to do on a scamp. Rover K series, Corsa TDI... etc.

The only stipulation is that i want to maintain the scamps existing front suspension, hubs & brakes (hybrid driveshafts are not a problem for me to make).

If i stick with the A series, anyone got any spare lumps knocking around ?

On a side note i'm in the middle of modelling up my MK2 into ProEngineer, so if anyone wants to preform some 'virtual mods' to a scamp let me know & i will eventually be able to provide accurate drawings...

Cheers in advance,

Neil

I've got more A series and A+ engines than you can shake a stick at (ie. about 8!). What are you after? I have everything from an 850 to a turbo 1275, with Magic Wand, remote or rod change. Are you local to me?

I'm in Hollywood ! Birmingham, and i'd class luton as close, compared to aberdeen which was Walle's last home !

At the moment i'm running an A+ 998, bog standard lump. With the LCB manifold & 2" exhaust it sounds like a v8 Twisted Evil , but drives like a 50cc moped. Crying or Very sad Probably from a metro as it's got the later metro carb, verto clutch & rod linkage gear lever.
A nice little 1275 would get the little sod going a treat. Smile

After changing the head gasket (blew on the journey back from scotland), it's as lumpy as hell, bad scoring in 1 & 2 bores. My god i can't remember the combustion chambers being that small , call those valves, i've seen bigger matches !! Rolling Eyes The manifolds are all much bigger bore than the existing head ports, so it looks like a quite an easy swap.

Let me know what the financial damage for a 1275 would be & i'll see if my finances can stretch.... Pm me if you want, or n.hazelwood@blueyonder.co.uk.

Cheers,

Neil

If you're going to stick with the existing front suspension, that presumably means the existing FSF and you will need some very imaginative engineering to get anything better than the good old A-series into that. As I remember, major swap jobs seem to involve taking a complete engine/trans/suspension assembly from the donor and rebuilding the entire Scamp front end round it. Sometimes this means widening the rest of the Scamp to match...
