Engine and subframes
Hi
We are rebuilding our scamp, when we purchased it the engine and box had been removed and left outside so they are seized up.
We have been offered a 1275 engne box and front subframe from a 1985 mini mayfair. We haven't seen it yet but think it has hydro suspension.
Will the rubber cones from our front subframe fit the latter subframe, or whats the best way to make it fit together.
Thanks
Mark

Re: Engine and subframes
The 1275 engine was not a standard fitment in a 1985 Mini Mayfair.
The sub frame will be dry, the last Mini to have Hydrolastic was the mark 3 Mini Cooper S which finished in July 1972 and also the Clubman 1275 GT which changed to dry as far as I can remember about the same time......
What month was the Mini mayfair, the reason I ask is because after June 1985 all Mini's were fitted with 12 inch wheels and 8.4 inch discs. These I strongly advise you fit with a 1275 engine.
Hope this helps.

Hi
I have checked with the seller it is a 1996 mini mayfair 1275cc. You are quite right it does have rubber suspension and 12" wheels.
Would the engine and box fit our subframe which is a 1971 mini with CV joints.
Or could we fit the complete subframe to our scamp with the discs etc.
It looks like 12" wheels will fit our scamp at the back with some spacers.
Sorry to be vague but Minis are new to us, always played with Landrovers before.
thanks

Re: Engine and subframes
Check the top mounting on both subframes- the late one will have one big bolt hole down the middle of each tower. If the other subframe has the same, you are laughing and it will fit straight in complete. If your existing subframe has 2 bolt holes each side of a large central hole, you will need to put the engine in your existing subframe. In itself not a problem, but a bit annoying!

Re: Engine and subframes
Or you could adapt the chassis to accept a post '76 (two bolt) subframe. I know Martin did it to Cyclops when he built it so not too dificult a job to undertake.
Re: Engine and subframes
I'm sure that the Mk3 Chassis that I have is drilled to suit either 1 ot 2 bolt sub-frames.... I'll have a quick gander tomorrow....

Thank you for all the input, sounds like either way we would be able to make the later subframe or engine fit.
It also has single point injection but I think we can change the manifold and fit a carb.
I am going to try and have a look at the engine on Saturday so should know more then.
We really want to get the scamp running and MOT in the next couple of months so we need to find a engine/box somewhere hopefully this one will be OK
