Wanted - Scamp
hi all, im new to the group,
i have wanted a scamp since bein a kid and seeing 1 in a mini mag.
any way i now have a company van so me "car" doesnt need to be sensible, not that it was (yellow skoda felicia fun pick up)
Any 1 got a scamp for sale, running with mot, not 2 bothered if bit battered.
so was after some advide
whats peoples opinion of Q plates? do they make your insurance more expensive
when looking for a scamp is there any thing i should check different from a normal car? problem points etc.
with kit cars i am under the impression that the make and modle on the v5 should say scamp? or what should i look for, and more importanty avoid.
thanks for any advice?

Hi there and welcome aboard. Your observation above is pretty much the most important one. If it's not correctly detailed as a Scamp (or some variation), you could be headed for a world of trouble. Avoid those that still say Mini or Austin Etc if you can. If you do have a load of MOTs with it that show it's been MOTed as a "scamp" even though it says "Mini" on the log book, I believe you *may* get the DVLA to change it without inspection....I wouldn't risk it.
I think a polite pm to "Mr Bridger" on this forum will get you the correct advice...
Cheers, Jono

Hi Will, welcome to the club.
Theres a Mk2 on E-Bay at the moment.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320331961389
No judgement either way, but it might give you an idea. Look at the Q&A at the bottom.
Best of luck in your search......Rob

Welcome to the forum mate.
Q plate doesn't make any difference to insurance (as long as you use a kit car insurer) my 160bhp Scamp costs £109 TPF&T. is that cheap enough?
Re: Wanted - Scamp
Found what I was looking for...
"The DVLA have agreed that IF there is credible evidence that the car has been on the road for AT LEAST 10 years AND there is at least ONE old MOT certificate describing the vehicle as what it currently is rather than the donor vehicle, the DVLA will amend the registration document to correctly describe the vehicle without an SVA test having been carried out.
Unfortunately, there will still be a fair few vehicles less than 10 years old that won’t be able to take advantage of this scheme. Our advice to such owners would be to hang on to the car (take it off the road and complete a ‘SORN’ declaration if necessary) until it is over 10 years old. We shouldn’t have that long to wait because on July 1st 2008, all the kits that should have gone through the SVA scheme will, by then either have done so or be more than 10 years old.
One last suggestion would be to approach the DVLA themselves and ask for a copy of any relevant correspondence that they hold on your vehicle. The DVLA used to microfilm all correspondence relating to any car and they hold it for the car’s entire life. Sometimes, this can provide helpful clues as to whether or not the DVLA were informed when the car was built. In order to do this, you need to write to the DVLA giving your reasons for wanting a copy of the vehicle record. You have to be the registered keeper and you’ll need to have a good reason for asking AND you have to pay £5 or so but the information you get sometimes proves to be well worth it.

Re: Wanted - Scamp
As far as 'Q' plate is concerned, it does not seem to make any difference to the insurance at all. We have two Scamps in the family - 1 on a 'Q' plat and 1 on normal plate. Tony has insured them both at different times in his name. Both cost about £90. - A word of warning though - don't know your age but young drivers struggle with insurance as most kit car insurers wont look at drivers under 21 or 25 in some cases.
Nic finally got insurance - for a cost!

Re: Wanted - Scamp
Hi W1ll, good luck in your search.
Registrationwise, any Scamp can be in one of these categories:
1 Registration inherited (legally) from a single donor
2 Registered new with a date-related suffix
3 Registered new with a Q prefix
4 Still registered as the donor vehicle (illegally)
5 Never been registered.
The rules governing the choice of 1-3 changed in the mid-80s. In each case, if the V5 has a line saying something like "rebuilt from new and used parts", you're laughing.

More to the point, 'What's a normal Scamp?'
You can pay what you want for a Scamp - depends on what you want and what is available.
They do sometimes go for silly money on ebay. As complete and utter newbies 3 years ago, we paid too much for the one Scamp, although, to be fair we have had our moneys worth and we didnt need to do anything to it(£1600 I think) But our second one was a bargain - £120 - but it had not been on the road for years and there was no guarantee that the engine was any good. It was! but we have still spent bout £1000 on doing bits to it even doing things on the cheap - so you pays your money and takes your choice.
Good value fun though! - oh and welcome!

As much as you're willing to pay/spend.
Reg's 'Monster' was built (back in 1999) for £1,500. He has since spent a bit more on it (replacing the 1.6 GTi engine with the Mi16).
My 'MESS' has cost me around £4,000 in parts so far, and I'm expecting to spend another £1,000 on it.

I don't look at receipts anymore.
The engine and box in the Pea cost over £3.5K for the parts! It was a one off as I had the money at the time. Not sure i'd do the same now though.
Mind you it'll keep tight to a Civic Type R up to at least 80! Not bad for an A-Series Scamp hey?

Still want one?
Hi Will
I've decided to sell my 1000cc short wheelbase Mk3. I've offered it to the previous owner (who had to relinquish driving for six months due to surgery) but have not heard back. Give me a ring on 01452 424545 if you are interested. Otherwise it'll go on eBay.
Regards, Mick
