Scamp Chassis Number Empty Scamp Chassis Number

Post  Minivanman Wed Aug 07, 2013 10:47 pm

Having recently purchased a project which is supposed to be a MK3 Scamp, I've discovered a chassis/frame number on the front crossmember where the bonnet closes.

AM 107692

Does the number have any recordable history?

The logbook that I got with the vehicle says "Clubman", can this be changed to "Scamp" legally

Thanks

Davy

If the V5 says the car has been rebuilt ("from parts some of which were not new" is typical), you're OK. If not, you're not.

The number is broken down as below:

AM Andrew Maclean (the company owner)

10 Tenth kit produced

7692 7th June 1992 (date kit made)

Did you get any history with it , old MoT certs. This proves it has been legally on the road at some point.

The car was never completed so there is no history of MOT's, got the original receipt for the chassis when it was purchased in June 1992.

If it has never been on the road as a Scamp then legally you need to take it for an IVA test to correctly register the car to run on the road and insure it. Unfortunately standard MK2 & 3 Scamp kits don't meet the criteria to pass the test which is why they stopped being produced*.

A guide to the IVA is here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guide-to-the-individual-vehicle-approval-iva-scheme. The test manual for passenger vehicles is here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/iva-manual-for-vehicle-category-m1.

If you did want to get it on the road then you'd have to do some modifications and the test costs £450. If it had been on the road before 1998 with some evidence i.e previous MOT's stating Scamp or dateable photos etc then it is possible to get the registration make changed over. Sorry Sad

Charlie

*Actually they didn't meet the SVA test, the predecessor to the IVA for kit cars, that came in to being around 1998.
