Scamp fuel tank
Hi all I'm having trouble with the fuel tank sender or switch ,not sure which one. I get no reading at all with the wire attached but if I take the wire off and connect this to earth I get movement at the switch end but if I put the wire back on I get not .So I thought bad earth ,but I've got a really good earth ,so I'm thinking is it the sender unit . If so what type of unit is it . The fuel tank is a scamp one under the rear seat. Please help cheers in advance. Wal

Re: Scamp fuel tank
Hi Wal,
Can you get the sender out of the tank and work it manually? If you can get it out of the tank you can also check it with a meter to see if the resistance changes.

Hi SUMB, to tell you the truth I'm shit scared of touching fuel tanks and I'm not really sure how to get it out its a funny looking thing a bit like a wavey circle I might need a special tool or do I just ram somthing in it and twist

Re: Scamp fuel tank
This is the joy of Scamp ownership - you never quite know what parts the previous owner has used.
Most MK1 Scamps used a Mini Van tank and the MK2's and MK3's tend to be a Scamp manufactured item but using a Mini sender unit. These are held in place with cross head screws.
You need to try and determine what tank you have to then find out how it comes apart.

Re: Scamp fuel tank
Try measuring the resistance at the actual sender itself, i.e. between the terminal and the sender body. It should about 250 ohms with an empty tank, down to 18 ohms full. If that's OK, check the sender earth connection - ideally it will have its own earth wire: there's a tapped hole on the sender body for it.

Scamp Fuel Tank
Sorry to hi-jack this topic, but I've recently purchased what's supposed to be a MK3 Scamp, it has a new tank but does not have a sender in it, the tank is in the rear of vehicle under what would be the rear seat, it's definately not a van tank but it looks like the sender unit is from a van, can someone confirm this for me please?
Thanks in anticipation

Re: Scamp fuel tank
Hi minivan man.
The MK3 has a mild steel fabricated tank with a tapered rear to match the slow of the rear panel.
And it does indeed use a mini van sender :-)

Scamp Fuel tank
Told you I'd be back,
What size and thread are the screws that hold the sender unit onto the tank?
Thanks
Davy

I've an idea they're not a UNF thread: electrical equipment at that time generally used BA.
There's a comprehensive table of thread sizes here.

Re: Scamp fuel tank
That's weird.
I just came on to ask if the fuel tank on a mk 3 comes out through the boot hatch.
I have removed the mounting bolts through the spare wheel holder. There are two more bolt holes in front of the tank but they have never been drilled through. Are there any more?
