MK III for sale... Now sold
Hi everyone,
Looking to sell my MKIII, 850-based Scamp. It is cureently SORNed, but has an MoT until September. Pictures here:
http://www.steele3.freeserve.co.uk/scamp.html
It was a father-and-son project, bought fully-built but off the road a few years ago. Since then, we've had a lot of fun both working on it (though we got a mechanic to do the bits that were beyond my toolkit and brains) and driving it. I don't think I need to tell anybody here the "good bits" about a Scamp, so, at the risk of setting a negative tone, I'll try to be as honest as possible about the bad bits:
The fuel gauge doesn't work;
The paint job ain't that great. The pictures flatter it;
Some of the electrics are a bit untidy, though only the aforementioned gauge is actually dodgy.
Much as I like the Scamp, I don't think it's the car for my son, fast approaching 17, to learn to drive in. Our family car's an auto, so the Scamp needs to go to make room for something else.
To be honest, I don't know what to ask for it. Looking at eBay and the non-running sheds, it seems I should be looking for £1000+, but that doesn't sit right with me. I've put it up for £750 on a couple of Mini sites. If you think that's ridiculous, please tell me.
The car is in Carluke, Lanarkshire, about 15 minutes from the M8 and M74 motorways.
If you are interested, please PM me.
Thanks for reading,
Gregor

Sorry, meant to add that I have the gull-wing doors and a hood for the rear deck. The hood has seen better days.

Gregor, welcome to the Forum. A pity you're selling your Scamp since, if your excellent website is anything to go by, you'd have fitted in well with this mad crowd.

Sadly, I don't see another way. I doubt if I'd get insurance for my son on the Scamp and, whilst it was great for him learning the rudiments of car control, it's not really a learner car for the road (I bet some of you feel differently). Glad I have had some Scamping fun - I used to dote on the adverts for the kits when they appeared in Hot Car in the seventies.

Daisy (a Mk3 Scamp) was our daughter, Nic's first car!! She learned to drive in it , her boyfriend learned to drive in it and she -x sorry WE insured it for her when she passed her test! It's still her first love!! (Although, to be fair, it is not insured at the mo cos she has two other cars insured!!!) They make wonderful first cars! Having said that Nic is not your average young person!!!! She is special ...VERY special - as many people on here will bear witness to!

May I asked who you are insured with? I'm with Adrian Flux and e-mailed to ask what their policy on young drivers was, but have yet to receive a reply.
I've taxed the Scamp so that I can have fun with it if I don't sell it. If I do, the tax is included.

hiya (im the daughter with Daisy :-D )
on the phone every one said no to me,,, as a learner, and when I had passed.
then just after passing my test, we went up to stonleigh, and "footman james" were there with huge signs saying that "we'll insure any one on anything" ,,, so we asked,,, £800 third party fire and theft :-D ,,, we payed on the spot- haha.
We even managed to get an agreed valuation on her of what we had paid :-) ... which was ace.
(Going on at the time I was paying 800 for my mini park lane as well... fully comp, it wasnt bad :-D)
"Quinn Direct" are also good for young drivers on Kit cars (or always were) ... there the only company that will insure me on the Pajero now (with 4 years no claims) and charge less for me on that than most of my mates pay on corsas, clios and fiestas :-D
good luck
Scamps r a lot of fun as 1st cars (though I was always iffy about taking daisy or my mini in to towns due to the attention they got- so i bought a boring normal car for that :-P )

Scamp Mk III - extra pictures
For those asking about the wet weather gear, interior, engine bay and underside.

Thinking maybe £750 was optimistic?

Re: MK III for sale... Now sold
Hi Dave,
I thought it was cheap compared to the ones I'd seen on eBay that weren't even on the road, though I dare say you could get a faster, more comfortable "normal" car for the same price. Perhaps it's because I'm in Scotland rather than the Midlands? (I mean, from an accessibility point of view, not because English people will be suspicious that it's made of deep fried Mars bars).

I agree about the price totally reasonable. You could be right about location though don't know if passports allow us that far up north.

Re: MK III for sale... Now sold
To answer another FAQ: it is registered as an Austin Mini, but on a Q-plate with all the necessary stuff about it being rebodied on the V5. I checked with one of the senior members of the OC that this was OK when I bought it. The V5 has the correct AM.... chassis number.
Probably going to put it on Gumtree now and face the tyre-kickers and people who don't know what it's worth trying to beat me down. To be honest, I'd rather sell to an enthusiast at a knock-down price than to an idiot!

I've reduced the price to £650 in the hope of selling to an enthusiast. Thanks to all who have offered advice or expressed an interest so far.

What a shame I don't have a job at the mo, would have ripped your hand off for it at that price. Someone's going to get a real bargain!

Hi,
I have asked a friend who lives not too far from you if he would come and have a look for me. Could you pm me your postcode?
