Just had to buy a new laptop due to the last one drinking about a 1/3rd of a mug of coffee.
The other 2/3rd went in my crutch after waking up with a start after a 11 hour day shift

Having had a play with a friend's new laptop I have to agree with you about Win8. I'm sure it's great on a touch screen tablet but completely pants on a laptop. BTW there are a number of 3rd party programs you can get for a few pounds that will get it to look nearly like Win7 including returning the Start button.

Welcome to the Club! Twisted Evil It has taken me four weeks and some very gentle easing to get used to it. (My old laptop is still working but the cogs whirl rather slowly!) I am just about getting there now. Put everything onto the 'old style' desktop and just use the windows 8 menu page as your start menu. I still find the mouse annoying cos it changes the page when I don't want it to but have been given the magic hold ALT and cllick TAB to return to the last page you were on. I am finally feeling that I know how to handle this now. Give it time. You will get there.

I agree - the system was def designed for touch screen!

Alt+Tab is extremely useful for switching between progs on a laptop where you've only got one of those nasty little touchpads.

Somewhere in Windows Help you should be able to find a complete list of keyboard shortcuts (having done so once, I printed it off to save meself the bother), or see this page.

On the "Windows 8" thing, I "upgraded" my Nokia N8 mobile phone for one on the new Nokia's, they now work off a Windows Platform similar to Windows 8, the phone went back in less than a week because I couldn't get on with it and changed it for a Sony Experia and it's bloody briliant.

Chris - I think you and Tony must have been separated at birth! He also got his new phone on windows 8 and sent it back within a week - in his case, not just because of the operating system, but because he would have needed to carry a rucksac around to carry the damn thing! (Do you remember when they started to make phone smaller - pocket size?) He was going to get the Experia - but found out it was even bigger than the one he sent back - so now has bought himself a new N8 - which still seems to have the best camera on any phone! Dawn has benefitted from the 'upgrade'!

Like most of these new systems, I suppose it will all be self-evident eventually. As I say, I am getting there now after a lot of trial, error and bad language! Shocked

Got a quote of just under £100 to have a new keyboard fitted to my Win 7 Dell.

Then I will sell on this heap of wotsit for about £250, a loss of 100ish.
