rear wheel drive or AWD
Hello to all. Does anybody seen converted Scamp to rear wheel drive or all whell drive?
Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
Hi Nitro,
there have been several AWD Scamps but i can't recall any RWD (yet)
Off the top of my head the AWD cars have been based on;
Suzuki SJ410/SJ413
Dihatsu fourtrack
Subaru brat
2x Mini/Metro A-series engines
Fiat Panda 4X4 running gear with engine in a metro subframe.
Morris Marina engine & box driving two Triumph Herald diffs in Metro subframes. (My favourite!)
Anymore anyone?

Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
May be my question was not correct. I see Suzuki/Daihatsu based car. It seems to me this car built in more heavy class. The base car was constructed for off-road. Chassis is very simple for Mk3.
For example - my last Niva 4x4 based cross buggy
/rope is for wheel aligment/
It is very heavy. I know about Scamp approximately 10 years, I like it and now think about replica building. I have rwd car for it. Motor bay is not enough for engine and I try to find any ideas. So may be I will try to find different donor

Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
Hi Nitro,
As a rough guide....if it's been fitted into a mini, it will fit into a Scamp, with plenty of swearing & hitting with a big hammer.
For common mini conversions have a look at http://www.16vminiclub.com/forums/index.php
Vauxhall small block engines, 1.2l up to 1.8l (8 & 16 valve versions),
Honda Vtec engines,
Suzuki Swift,
Rover K Series,
Toyota engines,
Can all fit into the mini front subframe, with some subframe modifications.
Even the Vauxhall 2.0l redtop engine will fit into the mini subframe, with a lot of cutting & welding though.
I've gone for the simplish Vauxhall conversion, 1.4l 8v (C14NZ) 58bhp version.
A pic before the accident...showing a standard Mk2 scamp front end & modified subframe.
James & Reg on the other hand are a pair of highly qualified lunatics & have gone the peugeot route.
At the end of the day, if you have the machining / welding abilities (looking at your workshop - you do) then almost anything is possible.
Neil

The Audi Turbo engine is ready to go in the Monster... but whether Reg is ready to do the actual conversion is another thing totally!
But if all goes to plan, the Monster will become a mid-engined, RWD beast!
Don't bother watching this space, it might take another year before he gets on with it (lots of projects on the go).

RE:rear wheel drive or AWD
Neil its no use quoting such engines for Nitro he is in Moscow, i would imagine cars will be a little better constructed for the weather conditions out there.
What are you planning on using you rwd buggy/scamp for?
Shame as i,d like a Zill did they make a 4x4 version?
There was a rear wheel drive mk3 suggested as ive spoken to Andrew Mc Clean about them, But none were actually produced. Austin mini based only.
Does your car/chassis have to use round tube or would you use box section like the scamp design, as i owned the blue suzuki based car but converted to a ford 4 cylinder diesel with a lot of help from a good friend.
Arent the Lada engines Alloy and do the have a transfer box couldnt you just run rear wheel drive?
I guess we need to know what your planning to used the car for and if you need petrol or diesel. Did the small suzuki jeeps get to your country?

Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
AUDI engine must be installed far the front end. Engine lenght is approx. 460 mm + 180 mm the distance from engine to gear box flange to axle of differencial. It is available in Moscow in good quantities. Escort more interest for it - is is possible to shift engine to salon and take more long drive shaft.ZED wrote:...The Audi Turbo engine is ready to go in the Monster... but whether Reg is ready to do the actual conversion is another thing totally!

Some draws
The first approach to official draw from one article.
May be it is more simple to use as a donor car this:

I want to use lite car for rapid runs on track for my pleasure.GT3Rob wrote:Neil its no use quoting such engines for Nitro he is in Moscow, i would imagine cars will be a little better constructed for the weather conditions out there.

Replica must be most close to original car. What is a dimension og the square tube?Does your car/chassis have to use round tube or would you use box section like the scamp design, as i owned the blue suzuki based car but converted to a ford 4 cylinder diesel with a lot of help from a good friend.
Arent the Lada engines Alloy and do the have a transfer box couldnt you just run rear wheel drive? It looks like 1.5 inch. What is a thikness? May be 1/8 inch? It looks like this dimensions.
It is possible to find both version - Japan and European of Suzuki. I want petrol engine, it's crankshaft rotates more quicklyI guess we need to know what your planning to used the car for and if you need petrol or diesel. Did the small suzuki jeeps get to your country?

Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
Hi Nitro,
You are quite correct, the box section for the Scamp chassis is 38.1mm (1 1/2" in imperial ) and wall thickness is approximately 2mm
The Audi turbo engine that ZED and her husband have is going to be fitted in the back of the car - making it rear wheel drive but also heading towards mid-engined.

Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
I'm not competitive Rob, i respect initiative & pipe dreams....where would technology be without initiative
Its not quite a Scamp.....but you get the idea....
You beat me to it Chaz.... 1 1/2" square.
With regard to wall thickness, the stuff i've had to cut out of mine measured 2.64mm or 12swg as it used to be referred to.
Nitro, i spy a fellow AutoCad user......despite using Solidworks & stress analysis at work, i still do quite a bit of scheming up in good old AutoCad 2007 (i cut my designers teeth on the dos based V10). Where'd you get your engine dwg's from ?

It is no problem to use AUDI, so we had domestic plant (buncrupted by enemies) - AZLK with similar gearbox. Lada or Renault F3R engines. I built one mid engine buggy for this engine and gearbox, so I need LWB version. If I dismount rear case for gearbox and take off the 5-th gears I can mount hand made transfer case for installing drive shaft to front end. For D3 class buggy it is using widely. But it is no good for the similar car.
Czechia buggies
2 mm thicknes with 40 mm tube is enough strong! And heavy. For this car mass and engine power the FIA reglament advise to use more lite tube section. It has enough big reserve for safety. Solidworks is ok, but I have only AutoCAD 2004 on my working lap top. Solid works can not calculate welding seams - it looks to two tubes and seam as a one structure. Pro-Engeneer is more expensive and not available for us as a home user.
Engine is Lada-2105, gearbox from the same car. Drive shaft and rear end for Niva. It is RWD version. For AWD I do not know yet what can I use.
Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
I did think about putting a redtop in the front of a scamp with a ford type 9 box and sunbeam running gear. but in the end though it was better fitted in a sunbeam
Re: rear wheel drive or AWD
Trying to combine two draws as one picture. It seems to me scales differs a little. I hope I can to built it for a summer. I have 2-3 bussines trip in a month and have not free time.
May be I will make different design to combine two views.
