affordable soft top??? Empty affordable soft top???

Post  liquidfluid Sat Sep 11, 2010 10:41 am

hi, i,ve been a long time browser of this site and been looking to invest some time, money, sweat - prob blood and a few tears (maybe laughter?) on my first scamp.
to cut long story very short, i've missed out several times on finding the right motor at the right money in the right place....
a spartan treka has just presented itself to me, and it was too good to resist.
i am in need of a few bits and bobs for it.
one of which is an affordable soft top roof for it - and half doors if anyone can help i will be very grateful indeed!
thanks

Hi,

Affordable ? Hmmm.....now there's a question.

When I built my treka I had "Full" Doors and had Aluminium Sliding windows made by a company that supplied Tractor/ForkLift Cab manufacturers.....but weren't cheap. Lots of alternatives are possible......sliding window channel is easily available....glass can be cut to size but perspex.....or it variations are also available relatively cheaply.

The Hood for my Scamp was made by a local supplier of Canvas and Tarpaulin Suppliers and Lorry Tilt repairers.....this was really good value.

See https://scamps.forumotion.co.uk/general-f1/i-need-my-scamp-hood-making-t505.htm?highlight=hood

Hope that helps......

Dave

PS: Trekas are really good.........But Scamps have got more character !

affordable soft top??? Empty boat trimmers?

Post  liquidfluid Sat Sep 11, 2010 10:19 pm

hi, thanks for the link.
i was thinking that there must be an outlet somewhere in the motor trade that caters for the likes of us , the frugal hobbyist.
i have several friends who actually sell boats and i myself used to transport them all over the the place for the happy punters, everything within the boating industry is generally double expensive. my first thought was to try my local trimmers - but without even asking i imeadiately dismissed as a wast of time...
a broker friend of mine charges 700 for a roof on a 24 footer - unbelievable!?!
perhaps i had written off the idea somewhat prematurely.
i'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they can come up with a specail price for me.
i do have the lower doors on the treka already, i was toying with the idea of knocking up some box section with pespex sliding in channel, shame i've never seen another treka in the flesh - may be of some help....
cheers dave

FWIW, the soft top for my Mk1 cost me £200, back in 1984. It was done by a coachtrimmer firm, and a pretty good job they made of it.
