It was me..
Hi.
Just bought this car on ebay and want to do it up.
It appears that it has been "maintained", that is most appears original with a lot of repairs not to the highest standard!
Can anyone tell me, the fuel tank exist above the O/S/R wheel. Looks like it might be a van tank. Is that correct? It appears to have had a hole cut in the upper wing panel to allow for this.
Any other info about this car would be helpful.
It is registered as 1960. I take it this was the donor vehicle age?
Is is a MK1.
Appears to have the original Morris engine.
Is it worth keeping it all standard? Don't mind keeping the engine, but would need to update the interior.
Any help appreciated.
Regards
Andrew

Welcome aboard!
Andrew, congratulations on your new acquisition! We'll willingly give you any help we can.
You are perfectly correct, the tank originally fitted to Mk1s is indeed the type used on Minivans / pickups / estates. The hole for the filler neck wouldn't have been factory-cut and is tricky to get right first time, so some of them aren't particularly neat. The tank should be suspended, via plastic inserts and self tappers that may by now be well corroded to unusability, between a crosspiece at the front and some short lengths of steel bolted or welded to one of the rear crossmembers at the back. If it needs replacing, unfortunately new ones aren't cheap and used ones are practically unobtainable now. However the Scamp design is nothing if not versatile so you could think about suitable alternatives - suggestions anyone?
Mk1 Scamp kits were produced in the late 60s, so the 1960 registration should be that of the donor. That was quite an early Mini: it would have had a floor mounted dip switch and starter button, and possibly a straight gearlever. I can't tell from the e-bay photo though.

Update
Thanks for the pointers.
I am Based in Kent, so not close to either of you guys!
I have had a couple of mini projects on the go for a while and have quite a few fabrication facilities.
Have a look at www.v6mini.co.uk.
I'll have a look at the tank mounts, and will probably re-sheet the rear wings anyway.
It seems that the top of the 2 rear shocks sticks through the rear wings... doesnt look right.
The hole for the tank in the wing has probably been cut with a blunt bread knife.
Thanks again.
Speak to you again no doubt.
Andrew

Re: Another mk1 for sale on ebay
OK chaps and chappesses, we have a precedent to follow - who's going to be first with a Sierra powered 4 x 4 Scamp? (Don't look at me though - I might be an engineer by profession, but a software engineer)
I agree about the rear dampers projecting through the bodywork - I've (unsuccessfully) been trying to find a good solution for years! Probably the best would be to drop the top mounts and fit shortened dampers. Only then the nuts get plastered in mud...

Re: Another mk1 for sale on ebay
I thought about using 405 Mi16 4x4 running gear on mine, as all it meant doing was changing my gearbox for the 4x4 one and using the 405 backend.......Rum Tum Tugger wrote: who's going to be first with a Sierra powered 4 x 4 Scamp?
In the end I decided that it's more fun off roading with a fwd car, and people would have said "it's 4x4 so it should be good off road!"
However, I've now decided to put an Audi 1.8 Turbo in the back of a Scamp..........
