Inner pot joint refitting
Hi can anyone tell me how to refit pot joint back onto diff output shaft (engine is still in mk1 scamp with drive shafts attached to pot joint).
Needed a wedge to remove but circlip in diff shaft stops pot sliding back in. Splines OK as goes on without circlip.
Haynes talks about putting a jubilee around joint but didn't work. Not much space for levering /hammering in
Any help please
Michael

Re: Inner pot joint refitting
Make sure that the new pot is well greased and that there are no burrs on the new pot splines.
Unfortunately it is a lump hammer job on the end of the drive shaft.
Its always worked for me.
If someone can give you a hand to keep it all level, all the better.

Re: Inner pot joint refitting
It's always a job, especially with the Scamp stuck on axle stands, in a garage with not quite enough room either side to swing a hammer. I was that desperate once, I almost tried to use a jack sideways against the wall to press the thing on. Almost.
The problem (I seem to remember from Keith Calver in Mini Magazine a while back) is apparently that the inner circlip was originally chamfered on its inner edge, to lessen the amount of brute force needed. For economy, and because it's near impossible to quality-check, they no longer bother these days.
And it goes without saying, it's lump hammer on socket on wheelnut on end of driveshaft if you want to use the threads again.

Thanks for your help. I thought it was going to be brute force but was a bit concerned about damaging diff / drive shaft joint using a lump hammer.
Shame they changed from u bolts on the ujs it took longer but I found it was easier.
