Re: New Scamper
New on the forum today! Hello all!
I've got a Mk1 which I am aiming to take to Newquay for the May bank holiday- usually there are 3 or 4 Scamps there. Wish me luck! I was the lucky winner of the Scamp trailer on ebay created out of the back of a 6 wheel Scamp. The chap informed me that it was a bolt-on/bolt-off set up, and that the handling was diabolical with 6 wheels! I have plans for the trailer...

Re: New Scamper
Hi Wheeliebin, welcome aboard! Good choice of ID - I've heard the Scamp referred to as a Mini Skip before now - somebody must have seen the amount of junk in mine.
What happens at Newquay? I'm usually at Newark that weekend, but I'm planning to be in Padstow for May 1st so might be around.

Re: New Scamper
Usually Mini based stupidity, a cruise around the narrowest roads in Cornwall, lots of drink...erm..thats it as far as I can remember! I've been every year since 1996! Have a look at the photos: http://www.rivierarun.co.uk/

Re: New Scamper
Welcome aboard Wheeliebin.
6 Wheel bolt-on kits were available from the factory and an ideal way to increase the load capacity AND b*gger up the handling of you Scamp at the same time. Superb!

Come and say hello..the Scamp is orange with a white roof (if it rains!) and white 10" wellers. Towing a trailer!

Re: New Scamper
Hi Wheeliebin,
Your Scamp wasn't owned by Caravan/Camping site owner in Wales was it?
Captain Campsite from Glyn Ceriog near Llangollen had an orange one with a white soft top to cruise his vaste empire.

Re: New Scamper
I don't think so. It appears to have lived its whole life under cover, as its clearly the original hood and paintwork from the original build, and I think it has been local (ie. Bedforshire) since it was built, probably around 1977.
It has been used properly though, as it has scaffold poles welded to the sill rails and off road tyres on the Wellers.
I know people on here don't like Scamps that are not properly registered, but mine has a proper Scamp chassis number of 00430, and is described simply as "Austin" with no model! I'll sort some photos out over Christmas.

Re: New Scamper
Hi Wheeliebin
That hopefully will be at least 3 Scamps down at Newquay for the Rivera Run to the Sun, as i will be going along with my Mini Club,(inc Mk3Scamp) The Funky Monkies (i will be opposite the swimming pool this year)
In answer to the other comment, it is held at the Trevelogue Holiday Park, Porth just east of Newquay on the weekend of the May BH.

Re: New Scamper
Bull****!!! We love all Scamps whether properly registered, improperly registered (don't ask) or unregistered! And if they've got wheels and an engine that goes, we love them even more.wheeliebin wrote:people on here don't like Scamps that are not properly registered

Re: New Scamper
Thats alright then! Mine is an Austin anyway...
By the way, I am sure I have seen your Scamp (TUR) driving up/down the A5 near Caddington a few times over the years- If you work close to Luton, give me a shout! I might need motivation to get the old thing on the road!

That was Paul Butterfield's Scamp. He was joint club pres at one point in the early nineties.
Re: New Scamper
Excellent! You know it from that description! His name was on the logbook as previous owner when I bought it (I kept a photocopy). Someone attempted to fit a 1300 to it in recent years, managed to crack the gearbox casing then gave up on it. I have a liking for 850s and 1000s, so I have plopped a Mk2 Hornet engine in (1000cc with magic wand) as I reckon that will do the job. Anyone got any pictures of it?

Re: New Scamper
Oooooh, excellent stuff Andrew........... We're (TRR - My hubby Richard/Reg & James, and my wee self) building my mid-engined 'MESS'.
As you can see from clicking on that MESS link I've been collecting the parts for quite a while. BUT, all good things come to those who wait, and we are well on our way now.
Good luck with the build,
Elaine.
