That got you didnt it! Can anyone recommend a suitable tyre for a 4.5x 10 minilight rim. And who gives the best deal. Im looking at 145 x10" over 165. It wont be going much over 80. No just a standard tyre falkens seam to be common unless you know better. Ive seen some at mini shows but the makers date said 1998 old stock or doesent it matter? Rob.

General advice is tyres last 10 years provided they're stored correctly i.e. out of the light and extremes of temperature. Tyres made in 1998 are only any good for display purposes IMHO.

Rubber fetish well sort of...... Empty Tyres OVER Ten YEARS Old

Post  NG Guy Sun Nov 03, 2013 9:47 pm

There have been documented cases of tyres more than 10 years old failing and causing serious road accidents; notably with MGB's and higher powered classic cars.

I realise that not too many SCAMPS have more than 100BHP on tap but I think the message is clear DO NOT USE a tyre over ten years old on a public road or under testing conditions (i.e. OFF ROADING).

I strongly recommend OSR's advice on this. Be Safe or to use the old MG motto "Safety Fast".

Bought a set of Pirelli Tyres for my Mk2 at a bargain price along time ago from a reputable tyre dealer (Setyres),not only did they decide to jack the Scamp up using the sump when fitting them, but after about a year the tyres started to bulge and disintegrate. So I contacted my usual tyre dealer who said the tyres were over 6 years old!! Some bargain!
And don't forget, your rubber thong will always double up as a puncture repair patch!

Guess I'd better go back through my records and do a tyre audit, as with my annual mileage it takes a lot more than 10 years to wear out a set.  Might be an excuse to drive with less-than-usual finesse.

These were the only guys I could find who supply 10" winter tyres
http://www.kingpin-tyres.com/tyres/re-treaded-tyres/passenger-car-winter/
I thought they also did 10" off road tyres but if they do they're no longer listed on their website. Not tried them but might well get a set from them when the MK2 is back on the road (Don't hold your breath!!!)

I dont need off road tyres they are going on a mini. I can find knobblies for scamp purposes. But have just sold my mk3 to a couple of dodgy characters. I wondered if anyone knows where to shop for road tyres. And if 145 or 165 on 4.5 x 10 which is best suited with no wheel arches.

Clive King has had Kingpin make the 145 gravel tyres in the above post for the Mini lads in the HRCR championship (as there isn't a reliable supply of 10" gravel tyres).

Google Clive king tyres and you'll find the HRCR website with his details on.

And before you whine about the price, these tyres are made from new 145 tyres that are scrubed down and re-moulded. They are not the usual crap that was knocked out by Colway back in the day
