2011 Mk2 scamp re-build "smokestack lightning"
Hi just doing a bit of re-engineering for the trip to the IMM in switzerland this year.
The trip was great last year in germany but a combo of brilliant scamp aerodynamics.....ie none, and a city-e gear box...2.9 final drive. meant that although the scamp would do 85....you had to do it in third flogging its brains out as there was simply no pulling power in fourth. So the aim for this year is to address this problem and a few others that have cropped up, hopefully someone may find this vaguely interesting......
Ive done a bit up until this point:
new subframe....well 40 year old subframe actually gone back to the twin bolt type, found a fully seam welded example locally so sand blasted it painted it and there it is:
And before fitting this new subby put on a new steering rack:
After the subframe was in started to consider the choice for the new engine. Ive kept it to 998cc just because i enjoy driving them, i have however overbored it by 40thou not through original design.
last november i bought a slark hillclimb block, it came complete with rods crank pistons and strait cut drop gears.
the pistons as it turned out were cream crackered. the compression used in the engine roughly 11 ish from what i can work out combined with the use of a 296 kent cam meant that the thing had to be thrashed constantly the block was pocketed to take a stage 3 ported 940 head. long story short ive had to use a different block and piston design everything else however has been transferred to give me an engine spec of:
998 A+ block bored 40thou.
balanced, lightened, toughened and cross drilled crank.
lightened and balanced conrods.
centre main strap.
276 kent cam.
superlight flywheel setup (light flywheel and backplate)
low mileage gearbox with centre oil pickup and 3.1 diff.
straight cut drop gears. - CURRENTLY HELICAL!!!
12g295 cylinder head mild port and polish.
And this is the engine in its current state:
to accompany the increase in power im fitting 8.4 discs also.
right sorry for the long winded post but there was a bit to explain in there.
edit --- cant seem to reduce the photo size?....any suggestions?

It's good to see you're taking your time with the engine and dialing in the cam? now that's just showing off
Re: 2011 Mk2 scamp re-build "smokestack lightning"
got a good chunk sorted tonight round at si's....
did have one problem due to the previous owner having tried to use the stevie wonder pot joint removal method.......pry bar and bray it...... small crack in one of the driveshaft plates. checked it out and seems there is no structural damage still debating on what to do with it....will have to get a fresh one i think

Er.......it'll never fit that way around all the oil will fall out
at least you'll be able to see any oil "if" it leaks.

Those straight cut drop gears don't look very straight cut. Do they variable adjustment from Helical for quiet road use to straight cut for competition use?
Re: 2011 Mk2 scamp re-build "smokestack lightning"
They may go in later......1700 miles to switzerland and back with strait cuts and no doors??............

It sounds like you're going soft up there in Cumbria.
'Pea' runs a full set of straight cogs and my ears are fine!
"whats that dear? half past two! No, two sugars. What?"
Re: 2011 Mk2 scamp re-build "smokestack lightning"
ok....due to some technical issues....my incompetance mainly, this current 998 engine is going on hold for the winter.
have just procured a different engine ....needs building up also but should be done much faster plus its run in.
will update once its gone in..........(ooohhh feel the suspense)

Re: 2011 Mk2 scamp re-build "smokestack lightning"
Slight change of engine spec as another engine became available just as i was losing patience with the 998....its still required building up completly but i had it built and in in two weeks so i didnt really lose any time...
Oh well the new engine is in....
1380 A+
stage 3 polished 1805 12g940 head
kent 276 cam
minispares lightweight flywheel.
3.1 ratio gearbox with minisport cross pin differential.
got it running the other day goes well provisionally.

Re: 2011 Mk2 scamp re-build "smokestack lightning"
Had the scamp running for a little while but it has developed a lovely oil leak at the primary seal so its currently in bits again...but ive got a few more photos to fill in the time.....
only just fits!
fabricated my own overkill lower mount.
new air filter
and the current oil seal repair
sorry for the random nature of the pics..

I use Microsoft Picture Manager free download I think from Microsoft website, once downloaded open a picture and cklick on edit and resize the picture to around 100kb or so and upload it to your 3rd party photo website e.g Photobucket, when you place it in your forum post it should fit without being cropped.

Servimg (the forum's default photo repository) provides the option to resize photos when they're uploaded. For landscape format, select 800 px width. Haven't tried downloading portrait.
