windscreen
while removing the screen today and cleaning off the dirt its got a small crack in one corner, it doesnt look laminated, has anyone had a new screen made? have searched tinternet for local firms to no avail, am not sure if theres any mot regs but laminated is a must, does it need to be kitemarked or something of the sort? cars now stripped to bare frame , not sure whether to have it sandblasted or spend a day with angle grinder at it.then few bits to replace, cant believe how much easier than a mini its goin to be. im goin to spray the lot with hammerite smooth as ill be using it off-road a bit + ( hamerite factory just down the road).

Re: windscreen
We had to replace our windscreen. We took a paper template to a local glazier. We just asked for laminated glass cut to shape. Must be arrassed(don't know how to spell that!) That means there will be less chance of it chipping. It's not kite- marked and we have had no probs.
Incidently - our Taz is hand painted with hammered finish Hammerite. Like you, we didn't want to worry about it when (NOt if) it got scratched.
Look forward to meeting you at some 'do' in the future.

Re: windscreen
I've had to replace the windscreen a couple of times. No problem getting a windscreen shop to cut a new laminated-glass one from a cardboard template. The regulations specify how the glass behaves when broken, i.e. no big sharp bits. Either toughened or laminated glass can be used. Toughened needs to be made to size as it can't be cut afterwards.
The first time, I re-used the original ali angle and rubber channel section to mount it. It leaked, just as it did before. Second time, I got the glazier to provide me with a tube of the jollop they use to glue windscreens in nowadays, and used that. It was a bit of a fiddle supporting the glass in the exact right position while the stuff cured, but the result was much more satisfactory and I'd commend it to anybody.

Re: windscreen
removing the said ali angle was a right carry-on,every screw needing to be gently worked or theyd just snap.infact nearly every nut n bolt has had to be cut or ground out, its a battle all the way.

Re: windscreen
Thats the beauty of restoring a Scamp - its the drill bits you get through drilling all the rivets out - and when you brake the bits all roll down the chassis tubes until they all stick together!!!!

windscreen also.
Hi sorry to jump in on this but....
Tried to remove my windscreen (as there is already a crack in it) got the the aforementioned bits of angle frame out no problem but the glass is held in by some VERY VERY tough sealant of some sort. Result being everytime i attempt to get the glass out it gains another crack, does anyone have any idea's? Is there some kind of solvent that will break the sealant down or a specialised method of removal?
Any advice much appreciated.

Re: windscreen
Presumably you'll be going to a windscreen shop for a bespoke replacement, I'd consult them if I were you. This link shows a tool of the cheesewire variety being used - not sure it isn't a hot-wire cutter of some sort.

It's down to Stanley/Scalpel blades and patience, I'm afraid. Be sure to wear eye and hand protection though as a snapped blade can "ping around a bit".....

Re: windscreen
If you need a replacement screen I'd use a Plant Glass company as they carry the laminated glass on their van & will cut it to fit at your house.
That's what i had to do last week. Looks good though.

Hi Nic-Nic,
I certainly did, but how could you tell?
Hamerite smooth
I sprayed yellow Scamp with yellow smoothrite, it looked good for about a year then it began to get a "bloom" on it and had to polish it out every year until it got so bad it was like a white film on it. It has now got a rollered coat of JCB yellow, we will see how that lasts. As far as the windscreen goes, as long as the cracks are not in the swept area of the windscreen(where the wipers go) they don't come under mot regs, so with the cracks outside of the swept area you just put stickers over them until you can't see where your going and then you replace the windscreen !!!!!!!!
