While we are on the subject - this was a topic which came up in Wales.

So, come on, those of you with 'projects' on the go- How long have they been sat in the garage awaiting parts, time and motivation? alien

Chris Yates says his was last at an event in 2004. affraid

Pete - aka green mk3 - says his took 10 years! (Well worth the wait though!)

My own Mk2, the one decorated like a narrowboat, was laid up 15 years ago and I started the restoration at the beginning of 2003....
So far I have:

  • Removed a rodent's nest from behind the dashboard, and another from the heater,
  • Replaced the 850 lump with a 1275 MG Metro engine,
  • Fitted front discs,
  • Fitted a rod change (the 850 with its magic wand found a good home),
  • Modified the Metro exhaust to fit (it had too many bends),
  • Completely rewired the front end using a combinaion of Mini, Metro and Triumph Dolomite bits (the steering column came from a Dolly). I have a complete photo record of this, but the negatives have been carefully filed away in a place so safe that I can't find them.
  • Replaced both rear swing arm assemblies,
  • Overhauled the brake master cylinder,
  • Fitted a proper changeover tap for the twin fuel tanks,
  • Re-routed the handbrake cables,
  • Fitted a brake servo, twice (had to move it on discovering it would have been impossible to bleed),
  • Unblocked a feed pipe that was blocked with peeling paint. Yes folks, the tanks were painted inside - though this might be normal for central heating oil tanks (the original builder's job) AFAIK.

Still to do:

  • Re-bleed the brakes (funny how it never seems to work first time),
  • Finish the handbrake: weld the new guides in place and make up new brackets for the lever.
  • Braze the dismantled fuel tank back together and connect up the fuel system,
  • Instal clutch hydraulics including new master cylinder,
  • Redesign and instal twin radiator (front and side) cooling system. The Metro starter relay and front engine breather are in the way of the original set-up.
  • Prime the oil pump, hook up a battery, and try starting the engine!
  • Clean the bodywork and touch up the paint where necessary.

in order that necessarily not!

BTW most of this was previously posted in another thread. It is impossible to experience deja vu for the first time - discuss.

I was hoping that retirement would give me the chance to make some progress, but although I have all the time there is, somehow it doesn't seem to have worked out that way. Maybe next year... I reckon 3 years to catch up with this and all the other outstanding jobs.

Does he now? Bob, you old sea dog! pirat

Anyway, I thought this was a family friendly forum. That is unless this 'how long is yours, thread' can be justified under educational information! whistle
