Well work out how much it cost to build and modify, take that figure and divide by two, then add the last two numbers on the number plate add them too the first number on the speedo, then ubtract 42 and times it by the number of seats. Should give you a good scientific method similar to that umsed by insurance companies Twisted Evil

Elaine,

Trouble is no-one could value all the work that has gone into it. Specials are never valued at what they cost. You need to talk to your insurers about an "agreed value"....and get it confirmed in writing as such. Just putting down your "best guess" on a proposal from won't cut it if you have to claim...

'K' is insured for £3000. Not sure what it would be worth if ever sold but £3K seems a reasonable agreed value.

Mmmm, that's what I thought..... I know Scamps aren't worth a lot, but Reg only usually insures it for £1500.... The suspension cost £600 alone, and that was back in 2000/1!!! affraid

Walle's insured for £3000, too. (This would probably cover about what i've spent in parts & stuff, plus about 1/2 the labour time i've spent).

The thing to remember is, its not what the cars worth, its what it would cost to replace it with a car built to the same high standards.

Once you start to look at the horrendous prices for scamps on ebay, and then start looking at the price of a donor car for all the engine/suspension parts, you might get to about 1/3 of the actual money spent. The most expensive parts are always the ones you forget, i.e. special radiator hoses, steel, welding gas, grinding discs, then painting/spraying. etc...

Also in the event of a crash/accident the only person with the knowledge to repair the car, is you !

Think "How long would it take to graft the engine in ?", now you know how you've done it, then think how long you'd need off work to do it yourself, & use this as a basic labour charge. THEN MULTIPLE BY 2

If in doubt send the insurance co as many pictures as you can, even if its just a picture of a radiator hose, it shows it special.
Some insurance co's can arrange a visit with an engineer/valuer to get a better feel for the "worth" of a car.

It seems insurance companies do the same for kit cars as they do for manufactured car values when it comes to paying out.... It doesn't matter how much you've said it's worth, they just look on the likes of Autotrader & Ebay for guide prices (unless they've been out and agreed a valuation)!

I've emailed Flux just to see how much they charge for a Guaranteed Valuation on a kit car...
And then you have to work out if it's worth paying the extra each year to get that guaranteed value, coz I'm pretty sure it'd bump the premium up a bit!

I'll let you know what they say,

See other post about insurance. Flux were the only company I could find that would insure Ian, the 4x4.

I could have an agreed value policy but wasn't allowed to use him to go to work.

Or I could use him for work but no agreed value.

Madness.

Policy in the end cost a lot but at least I know I'm adequately insured for a value I feel is reasonable. And they won't pay out £2.50 for a bog standard SJ should the worst happen!

Not everyone is as mad as you!! Razz Razz

Premium in the end was well over £400 which, for our area and age etc, is a bit ridiculous! But nobody else would touch him with the 'commuting' and 'agreed value' options I wanted.

But not everybody has a job that they absolutely love. Cool

£400?!! Shocked Bloody Nora, our Exige's insurance was only £360...

I actually meant how much do they charge to come out to value a car?

They don't come out. You pay a fee and fill in forms and send in photographs. You tell them what you estimate the value to be the they either agree or negotiate a value.

If I hadn't wanted agreed value or commuting, I could have got a policy for just over £100. But it's not worth it for a one-off.

Even so, £300's a massive difference.... What's the vehicle valued at? I think they're taking the wee-wee a bit, when you think Flux insured the Exige valued at £20,000 for £360. In fact it didn't cost us that much more in 2004 when the car was brand new and worth £30k.... and I don't want to rub it in, but we're both younger than you! Razz Laughing Wink

Value's only £2.5k (although would probably cost more in labour charges to make another one)!

It's the phrases: 'highly modified', 'commuting' and 'agreed value' that puts the price up!!!

Even the specialist 4x4 companies wouldn't touch it. Well, they would but not including two of the above phrases!! Heyho! I have a cool car that's properly insured - we're skint but happy! Laughing
