The plugs will be fine but your engine will have a Lucas D25 dizzy instead of the later D45, hence you need different points. plugs and points Icon_biggrin

Electonic ignition gives you a more powerful spark, you also need the right coil with it,but,if it goes wrong there is very little you can do apart from replacing the whole unit, whereas if you have points and a condensor you can just whack another condensor in or another set of points in if it goes wrong. Also if it does go wrong you need a dedicated module tester, whereas with the trusty points you can just flick the points open to see if you have a spark. But,as Martin says, there is always the AA.

The electronic ignition will wear out coils quicker as the current is more of a on/off spike then you get with points. I've just bought a new coil for my Scamp and it cost £8 from M&M in Warrington. I had a very informative chat with one of the guys there as I'd gone in to get a replacement ignition module as I thought that was causing the lack of spark. Turns out that the module was a newish refurb one and probably ok. Apparently he rarely has problems with them, usually it turns out the coil has gone. Now the Scamp has a lovely spark but still doesn't start but that's another story Very Happy

We used to look after a fleet of metro vans and cars a few moons ago,we had the normal point type of problems like condensor failure etc.,but the ones with electronic ignition we had to buy an ignition module tester,it saved alot of guess work and you could test the coil along side the module. The coils gave very little problems(providing the correct one was fitted, i.e. there are ones for standard ignition, ones for balasted ignition and ones for electronic ignition) it was normally the good old Lucas module that we ended up replacing a few of,a simple job providing you can test it first.

Is your ignition system ballasted (identifiable by a white/pink lead instead of plain white at the + end of the coil)? If so, possibly the ballast bypass isn't working. Measure the voltage between the + end and the chassis before, during and after starting - it should go up while starting.

For the uninitiated: in a ballasted ignition system you have something like a 6v coil instead of a 12v one, supplied via a resistor so it only gets 6v anyway. On starting, when the battery voltage drops under the load, an extra contact in the starter motor relay bypasses the resistor so the coil still gets enough volts to give a fat spark.

So don't forget, thin trim sparks, and connections on the coil that are sexless(not male or female).Oh and they are not sp--e connectors as this is not allowed either!!

So what was the problem in the end and how did you fix it, plugs and points Icon_question

or

was it the usual theory of if you strip it down enough times that it will fix itself when you put it back together again. plugs and points Icon_lol
