Blast from the past - Picnic from 20 years ago
It's been a while since I owned my MkII Scamp. It sadly succumbed to the pressures of so-called 'growing up'. (Marriage, baby, moving house etc) My 12 yr old daughter never saw it, except for a photo I have on my office wall. She asked about it this morning and it led me to dig out some photos.
These snaps were taken at a Picnic either in the late 80's or early 90's. My friend, Rob also had a MkII and we drove them down from Liverpool to a place, I believe, Robert Mandry loaned to the club for the event. I think we won the furthest travelled that year. It was a great weekend and I recall the only casualty of the off-roading being a bent tie bar which resulted in some unusual, but not so unsurprising, wear of the front tyres by the time we arrived back up north.
I hope some of you will recognise the people and cars in these shots and maybe it'll bring back some distant memories of a bunch of scousers that made a fleeting visit to the Scamp Picnic circa 1989.

A couple of cars I recognise.............
Steve Taylor's (pre)Lancia Scamp, John Copple's 6 Wheeler and Kerrmit.................
I can't make my mind up whether that's Bob in the yellow T shirt outside the pub (5th pic down).

Re: Blast from the past - Picnic from 20 years ago
That indeed is my hirsute self outside the pub.
Q557 NRO is my Mk2 still in primer, which dates the photos precisely to 1989. That was the last Picnic on the original site before it was sold for a golf course: the next one was elsewhere on Robert Mandry's remaining estate, which was not the same although it did yield some of the tastiest blackberries I have ever come across.
OTU 427H is still active - sorry, don't know whose it is,
ODC 523 belonged to Marie Taylor a couple of years back. However, by then it was much closer to the original Mk1 - no rollbar or rectangular headlamps - so perhaps the number was transferred.
PBK 3M belonged to Fred Cake who started the Club,
Q606 YAW was, if I remember correctly, one of the prototype Mk3s and the second to be built. Scampers for Oct 92 has a picture of it in 6-wheel guise.

OTU 427H this is Mike and Wendy Smiths car. I cant see any photos of our 6 wheeler but I'm sure we would be there somewhere. Robert was just 18 months old.

You were there all right - I have a fine snap of Robin driving into the gravel pit, and will digitise and post it in due course. But I filed the negative carefully away in a safe place which I can't remember, so don't hold your breath!

Re: Blast from the past - Picnic from 20 years ago
The six wheeler is John Copples(the one that got wiped out by a Sierra XR4),Peter Hill's red Mk1 "Kermit" and Steve Taylors Mk3 (pre Lancia trasplant).Shaun and Gary from the westcountry are there with their Mk2's (Gary's is the yellow and black one).Shaun was the guy who's Scamp only got cleaned out if it turned over. The Moke look a like Scamp I only saw the once,if I remember he did take a great deal of strength out of it trying to make it look like a Moke. And as for Bob Lilley's unusual conversion on a Mk2,well,I'll leave that to you to explain Bob.

Re: Blast from the past - Picnic from 20 years ago
Explain? Well, it seems Sam Finch, the guy who built it, just bought a bare chassis and made up his own body from recycled lorry windslammers, estate agent signs and anything else to hand. It was on the road for a time, and even made it to the '85 (?) Picnic. He died from a heart attack, and the car ended up in a scrapyard which was where I found it. All I did was add/complete/repair the missing/unfinished/damaged bits and paint it.

I still have the photo!
It wasn't intensional as the car park was a bog following three days of non-stop rain but I bet the owner was p!ssed when he came out to the car park to find one side brown instead of red!
