Re: chasis number
The Mk3's have a welded number on the inside of the front of the engine bay.
It consists of the Kit no. and the date of manufacture.
This is the number on my logbook and the one that they use for the MOT.

Re: chasis number
Mk2s don't have a number welded on from them the 'factory'. Your only hope is the dvla............johnonthetyne wrote:Jst had a quick look, couldn't see anything at all, seems like it's all ally apart from main frame
Re: chasis number
Kit purchasers were given the chassis number on the receipt, but it was up to them how they applied it. The usual method was to beg/borrow/steal a set of number punches, make one from a bit of scrap ali and affix this with pop rivets. At this time in history there was no standard place for it, so it could be anywhere readily visible. Given a bit of wet and enough years, the ali pop rivets eventually failed (see Galvanic corrosion) so the only evidence you might have now is a couple of spare rivet holes...
I believe some people took the number punches to the actual chassis itself, but in this case again, corrosion may well have obliterated the result by now.
The only satisfactory long term solution is the one adopted by Mr. MacLean, that of writing the number on the frame in weld.
