Hi John

What does the V5 state?

If its got a Austin/morris Scamp or Utility on it you should be ok.
No doubt others will state some other combinations

Have fun Rob

Depends. There are three possibilities:

- it was re-registered with a new number (good)
- it was re-registered and inherited the donor's number (good)
- it was never re-registered but still has the donor's number (bad).

In the first case the number will have either Q prefix or a late suffix (say V onwards - I'll have to do my homework to be sure). Early suffix (or none) could mean either of the other two cases, with no way of telling which without knowing what's in the DVLC records. If these show it as a Mini - or as having been scrapped - then you have a problem.

Incidentally it might have been re-registered, but not explicitly as a Scamp - my own Mk1 is registered as an "Austin 2-axle rigid body convertible".

A friend of mine is an MOT tester and just got his hand slapped for giving an MOT to a Ford Escort Pick Up when it was clearly an Escort Van.
The Pick up got pulled by an ANPR car and things went bad from there!!

So if you go by this things are going to tighten up -

Put the reg no in the links and see what it comes back as -

Mine is correcly reg as Austin Mini Scamp and comes back "Unknown make & Model"

DVLA vehicle enquiry.

The vehicle details for Q335 WFT Scamp are:

Date of First Registration 03 07 1984
Year of Manufacture Not Available
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 998CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available

Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour GREY
Vehicle Type Approval null

The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry. Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle 6 Months Rate £66.00 12 Months Rate £120.00

As it is still on the DVLA database you might be able to obtain a replacement V5 which was 19 pounds last time I got one.

12"s on the fronts and 10"s on the rear. Depends on the hubs.If you have 10"s on you may be very lucky to get discs,or given a guess drums. Most upgrade to alloys etc. Not too sure about handling you will need advise from those who own them.4x4 Rob. Very Happy

In my collection of pix, 12" seems to be the favoured option on Mk2s. However you will need final drive and speedo gearing ratios to suit, so it may just be a question of where your gearbox came from.

Speedo's (not swimming trunks).............My Scamp .runs on discs and 13" wheels as Bob says you need the speedo drive matched up with the guage (if the engine is out loosen the speedo plug off now, cause when the engines in they can be a bitch) or....

You drive along in a world of oblivion or

You follow your mate and draw little lines on your speedo or

It is a option with the Moke boys and some other kit cars to buy a bicycle electronic speedo system as a backup. These bolt on in the region of the back wheel and are quite accurate.

I have yet to work out what mine is actually reading. at 50mph on the guage i am in the outside lane passing trucks and cars and that is not down hill with a following wind.

Bottom line (of the list) is that they dont check it on the MOT, worry about it later!!!!

Alternatively fit a fag lighter socket and rely on your sat nav. Not that I have much chance of being caught speeding in my old cars, but with 9 points, every little helps (in the words of Tesco).

As you say - no speedo -no probs with the MOT. Taz has been thro 2 now without a speedo. We also use the sat nav solution. Works a treat - even beeps when we are speeding! (Easy solution to that one is turn the volume down - mind you we can't really hear it in Taz anyway!)

Does make me wonder tho - why do the insurance co want to know the current mileage? We have had to make ours up now for the last two years!

Are you on a limited mileage policy? If not it could be one of those things they're not bothered about but, to make things uncomplicated, ask you anyway.

I think my own mileometer is starting to go on the blink, well it has done 125K in the last 15 years. Either that or Newark is a bit closer to Bedfordshire than it used to be. scratch
