After 6 months rebuilding my wreck of a Scamp Mark 2 I finally get her running ready or so i thought for an MOT. On my first 100 yard dash I find my rear tyres rub on the shocks. The tyres are 145/10 and I have standard drums. What am I missing?

Thanks for that -didn't know spacers were available. I'll try some 5mm ones first.

rear tyres rubbing Empty tyres and clearance

Post  gm4bnu Sat Aug 26, 2017 12:32 pm

Hi all my first time on the Forum,I obtained a Scamp MK2 in the middle of June I must be crazy to take it on as I have limited mechanical skills. It was minus dashboard, seats lots of bits, but steadily working away renewing wheel bearings bushes brakes etc it is now a few weeks away from the dreaded MOT test.
I noticed the front tyres were rubbing on the inner wings on full lock, the rear tyres have plenty of clearance from the shockers but the drums are the built in spacer type.
Looking at the scamp the front wheels looked bigger than the rear but are the same size, the tyres are marked 155/70SR12 front and rear, but the front are definitely a different profile putting some other 155/70SR12,s on the front cured the rubbing problem now lots of clearance and both front and rear look the same size.
I hope someone can advise me about seats, the scamp had 4 wooden blocks where the seats had been mounted but putting seats in it was not possible to put my legs under the steering wheel! I removed the blocks and the steering column lowering bracket which gives a lot more space.
I have a couple of cloth and leather covered mini seats to put in for now but will I get away with the passenger seat fixed and non adjustable????
The scamp is marked SC2/85/118 I am assuming this means chassis Nr 118 of 1985,car was first registered in August 88 and had 3 owners including the scrap yard I got it from who had it stood outside for 2 years covered in old tyres and with 2 1800 engines weighing the rear down.
Reg is Q288 XSC.Cheers Paul.

Hi Paul, welcome to the madhouse! Your Scamp is a new one for the database - do you have any pics?

In this day and age, when cars no longer lend themselves readily to DIY maintenance, running a Scamp is an ideal way of learning car-bashing skills! After the essential Haynes manual (no longer listed on Haynes' website but still available from Mini Spares) and a decent toolkit, the next most useful things to have are a collection of Mini World or Mini Magazine back numbers, and a mechanically-minded friend. I'd guess you'll be au fait with matters electrical at least. Are you able to get to any Club events, Mini rallies or the like?

rear tyres rubbing Empty a work in progress

Post  gm4bnu Sun Aug 27, 2017 1:29 pm

Hi Bob nice to hear from you I have 3 or 4 mini manuals from 59----1996 so no problem ,I used to tune up and mod minis between 1970/75 so luckily some basic knowledge.Tool kit is pretty good even got a suspension tool to enable me to change the dust covers on the front suspension knuckles.Wiring I can ,do ex Weather Ship and Merchant navy radio officer before I went into Gov comms.I will try to get to some events but guess it will be next year.
The car was a total wreck but I could not resist the challenge moved up here to scotlands highest village when I retired last year, house is 1575 feet ASL a remote village up a winding pass, pulled the car up on an A frame.I have some rather poor pics of the car as it was I will have to send you them by e-mail as unable to get on photobucket, will send some more when the car is nearly finished better quality.
Unfortunately she who must be obeyed has me under decorating and and floor laying orders so poor scamp has work delayed.PS our internet/fone went off yesterday on temporary wi fi link at moment don't know whose !service is going to be at least 4 days to fix they tell me.This is the problem living in the outback.
Regards paul.
