Mk1 scamp pickup. Likely to be moke inspired
Hi fellow scampers.
I thought i would start up some kind of build log and hopefully a place to discuss my progress and ideas.
Hold on for more up to date pics, i need to host them somewhere first. Ill start with the brightwells auction pics first
The reasons i bought this one are that it was silly cheap, it has a cool looking/styled hardtop (i love the rake it has and the general shape of the roof) and the Jimini style front end. Apart from that i see lots and lots of stuff i plan on changing
There are many things that need attention. The whole frame needs to be shot blasted and re painted. The engine has no core plugs and i doubt its ran properly since 1988 (last tax) we kinda got it running but lost interest :/
The car looks like it was built well, originally, but it looks like a pleb has been let loose on it with a welder and an angle grinder. The roof structure was terrible and very dangerous.
I cannot wait to get the frame all done ready for a new roof structure and some modifications to bring it more up to date. That feels like a million miles off at the mo. I have a swift engined mini that i will be taking apart as a donor. I will not be using a swift gti engine in my moke though. Im not even sure ill be able to fund a decent a-series so i may take the cheap and easy option of using a cg13de out of a k11 micra (they are 1275cc 16v 85hp and have a 5speed box attached) my mk1 micra has one of those engines and i get 45-50mpg flatout haha
more soon

Every ones got to start somewhere, the cheaper the start then the more you can put into it.
Remember, with an angle grinder and welder then its only your imagination that is the limiting factor

So i took a break from this project. Daily driver needed new engine, then change of job and decided to buy a golf diesel for commuting. Golf turned out to be a nail Fixed the golf and now iam back onto this scamp
I got back into the project about a week ago and started by finishing the strip, down to a bare chassis.

Then i grabbed the closest angle grinder and array of wire brush attachments and proceeded to attack the frame work. Which was mostly covered in underseal. Horrible to remove, but there has been almost no rust, found on the exterior of the tubing. Lots inside though, iam not sure how to remedy this yet.
Once the frame was down too bare metal, i treated the whole lot in kurust

Re: Mk1 scamp pickup. Likely to be moke inspired
The last 2 evenings i have been busy cutting out and replacing parts that iam not happy with. I hated the way that the front end had been built up. The overall shape of the jimini style front end was ok, but some of it had been made up of scrap metal and badly aligned and also badly welded. The subframe crossmemeber was also not in the correct position and i wanted to raise it by 40mm so it looked tidier and also gave me some free ride height lowering The rear subframe is also mounted incorrectly, no crush tubes and out of alignment. Ill be machining up weld in bungs with the threads i need to mount the subframes. So only bolts will be used and no nuts
Rear subframe is mocked up in its new position...... 55mm higher for free ride height reduction
a pic showing some of the reworking of the front panel area, unfinished
And this is a pic of a sectio n i cut out that was rotten, the only rotten part of the chassis
These last 2 pics are mokes that have inspired me and my change of direction. I probably will leave the pickup bed and roof off.
Ill post more updates soon

Looks like you are making some good progress with yours now. It's interesting to see how the early chassis were made. Have you altered the front subframe mounts on the front crossmember?

Interesting project you've got there should look good when it's all done. Are you going to add some triangulation especially to the sides?

Re: Mk1 scamp pickup. Likely to be moke inspired
Hi everyone.
I'm considering selling my scamp project
£500 collected from Devon. Chassis and subframes have been stripped back and rust treated. Pretty much ready for paint.
Pm me on here if you are interested. I have a logbook.

This needs to go. Best of by the weekend can have it, otherwise it'll get weighed in for scrap.
