A series or A+?
We are consdiering buying an electronic ignition for Pepe as we have had all sorts of problems recently.
The problem is... does she have an A series or A+ engine. Does anyone have an easy way of finding out?

Re: A series or A+?
What size engine is it ? If it's still got it's original paint either red for a 1275cc or gold/yellow for a 998cc. I think it was only these two colours that were the A plus.
I think A plus engines only came with the Verto clutch and had short alternator brackets.
Are you trying to find out if you have a Ducellier or Lucas distributor ?
I fitted a Luminition system on my Mini but have had Aldon Ignitors on other cars. The ignitor seems to do the job just as well and if far simpler, all I had to do was remove the ballast resistor and fit a 12 Volt coil. I think Mini wiring looms have a ballast resistor wire which you might need to change along with the coil.
It's likely there is something obvious to tell the difference but I haven't really worked on Minis for a long while.

Re: A series or A+?
A+ blocks have:
- Stiffening ribs on the outside (Mini Magazine's guru Keith Calver suggests these were necessitated by the use of inferior cast iron!)
- Cap-type (recessed) core plugs rather than the earlier flattened domes
- Distributor held in by a forked bracket with one retaining bolt (the dizzy body is also different)
- Dipstick fitting directly into block, not via a tube
- Alternator bracket nearer front of engine, alternators are shorter than dynamos
