Re: Scamp Enthusiast
Welcome aboard, Steve.
You a right, no way does a Q plate go with Historic Vehicle status (yet). Except possibly via one tiny loophole.
Originally, kit cars built from a single donor kept the donor's identity, a new registration being issued where parts were sourced from multiple donors. The rules changed with the coming of year-prefix letters in 1983, Q plates being issued to cars that were not new when first registered - imports, ex-military vehicles and kit cars made with used parts. Later they were also given to recovered stolen cars whose original registrations could not be established. So you could, then, have a Q plate on a pre-1973 car.
The rule now is that such cars are assigned a registration whose "age" matches the (documented) year of manufacture, since a registration must not suggest that a car is younger than it really is.
Now, Historic Vehicle status is based on date of manufacture, not registration, and to qualify, a car has to be built before 1st Jan 1973 (soon to change to 1974). If it was actually registered in the first week of 1973, it will still qualify as in this case it was evidently manufactured before Jan 1st. Any later though, and evidence of the date of manufacture must be provided, and this will be mentioned in the V5.
So VED exemption for a Q-registered imported, ex-military or recovered stolen car seems to be a possibility. Can't see it happening on a kit car though.

More likely to finish off a Mini. Things have come full circle and it's not unheard of for a Scamp to now be used as a donor to a Mini restoration now Mini's have gone up in value. A Scamp project can be a very cheap source of parts.
Any way welcome to the forum!!! If you are interested in getting a Scamp put an ad on the Sale board you might hear from someone with in the club.

Re: Scamp Enthusiast
Most glass shops will cut you a piece of glass if you give them the correct dimensions.
Your frame will not need the double side supports if you are going to support it with a roof frame, and while your at it you could rake it back a bit to get rid of the brick like drag of the Scamp.
Best of luck.

Re: Scamp Enthusiast
I would suggest you leave the double rollbar in place - it's pretty well standard, although not universal, on Mk2s. It's also a good starting point for something a bit more extensive: Scamps aren't known as mobile climbing frames for nothing! See the pictures on the Owners' Club website for some examples.
I can't post pix at the moment, the photo repository at Servimg seems to be playing up for some reason. However, this thread shows what I've done to my own Scamp. The basic Scamp frame, being quite flat and lacking triangular bracing, has a tendency to twist, and the additions add some torsional stiffness. The back half is removeable BTW.

Re: Scamp Enthusiast
Congratulations of your new purchase!
Adding some tubes across the top of the door openings from the top of the windscreen to the rear roll hoops would help stiffen everything up. They'd also come in handy for attaching a canvas roof and roll up canvas doors if you wanted to make it (sort of) weather proof. Please keep us updated on your build

Re: Scamp Enthusiast
Hi Steve
Yep, the gallery is the place to be for your rebuild.
Dave, the admin man normally moves you over when threads start getting a bit long or go off at a tangent.
No probs
