I have been told about a member that had put his Scamp on Ebay but luckly it didn't sell. Someone had copied his registration number. It only came to light when he tried to re-tax the Scamp..So beware and blank out your registration number.

This was always happening in the 80/90's with personnal number plates which were either on Sorn cars or not on a car.

You would think that in this day an age of computors that it couldnt happen. But there again it should make it easier to track them down.

I would think that if the DVLA has your number (i.e. car taxed or SORNed), you should be safe, as one of the reasons for SORN is to prevent this sort of fraudulent use. In the old days the records were dropped from the computer after 2 untaxed years, and from the PNC after 5, now they stay on it for as long as SORNs get renewed.

The problem arises with cars like my Mk2, laid up since before SORN was introduced in 1998. In fact I wonder whether to submit a SORN anyway, just to make sure the number isn't mis-used.
