Weird Light

Post  USAMilScamp on Wed Sep 05, 2012 9:03 am

So quick question. I have this light on my console above my speedometer. It only comes on and stays on when Milly is off. I've yet to trace the wire to where it goes due to behind the console there is the source of all the worlds nightmares of rats nest wiring. Anyone know what this may be? I'll post a picture soon.

Milly?

Does the lamp have one wire going to it (i.e. the other side grounded) or two?

I think we need some pictures Smile

If you have a classic mini round speedo like this
http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Gauges/Speedo/13H4442.aspx?1404&ReturnUrl=/search/classic/speedo.aspx|Back%20to%20search
then the light at the top is meant to be either Main Beam or Indicators depending on how old it is. However there's no telling how previous owners have wired things up. I wonder if it's meant to give the impression the car's got an alarm?

Sympathy on dealing with the rat's nest. Iain, my OH, has just about finished rewiring my MK2. Only taken 18 months but it is a thing of beauty, he's even done wiring diagrams affraid

When it comes to Scamp wiring.....either meticulously go through every wire & check where it goes.....or rip them all out & start again..

Mine has still got some original mini wires left in it....think the plug & cable on the wiper motor is still mini ! Everything else is either VW, Vauxhall or totally custom.

If your going to re-wire, make sure you've got every wire going to the right place, is routed the best route & is the right length...then & only then wrap it in tape or spira-wrap.

As i'm sure Ian (Mr OSR) will agree with me on, there's no job worse than unwinding spira-wrap just to add another wire to the loom. (I've used / wasted 25m of the blooming stuff - so far).

Another tip, if you can't get the correct colour of wire (ie blue with white strip) & decide to use another colour... either add cable markers at each end & create a new circuit diagram or at the minimum pencil in the new colours into your Haynes manual diagram.
80% of my loom is yellow wires, 20% black wires, with the remainder in blue, brown, green etc... & i've not done a circuit diagram yet...looks like an even bigger rats nest than when i started.

Oh & welcome to the mad house.

By the way, this forum thrives on pictures...any problems will usually get sorted out much quicker if you can upload some pics. (see sticky in New Members section)

I found mini trunking useful when running cables to the rear, just pop of the lid when you want to add another cable Laughing

I saw a post from someone in the US Air Force about a weird light and thought I was going to get probed. Laughing

Hi
It may be a strange concept but have you tried asking the previous owner?

Considering i'm a mechanical designer, no maths isn't my strong point. Embarassed

That's why 20k worth of CAD station is my tool of choice...makes stress anaylsis & force calculations a doddle. Don't even need to remember the Trigonometry i learnt at school. Rolling Eyes

Oh the pain. I had to pay for extra maths lessons to get me through my HNC & now i can't remember any of it.

As i learnt......Selly Oak Hospital (SOH) Can Amputate Hands (CAH) Toes Or Arms (TOA).

Fortunately i was taught "Old School Design", i had to learn how to use a slide rule & log tables before i was allowed to use a calculator in the Drawing Office.

The worst we had to do was helical & spur gear calc's. Everything had to be calculated by hand, Pitch circle diameters, addendums, dedendums, helix angles, involute angles & backlash angles.
To design a multi-spindle with 25 different tools running at different speeds, in fixed positions, all being driven off one motor, would take the best part of a week in calculations. My CAD system allows me to do the same thing in less than 1hr ! & i can see the spindles rotate on the screen to make sure they turn in the right direction... Sleep

Just goes to show 20k of CAD system & we still don't know what the lights for !!!!! Technology sheesh.

Wonderful thing, technology. With a PC on my desk, I could waste more time in an hour than, twenty years earlier, I could in a week.

Only just seen this, it has a LED lamp above the speedo, in the middle of the dash, it sort of looks like it has an immobiliser or alarm when the ignition is off, was there when I bought it! The wiring was a little untidy and hidden away but I've left it alone as it all worked Smile

It can be seen here...
