Hello Scampers,
this is my first visit to your site which I found whilst trying to find information about a vehicle I have aquired. It is an RTV which I'm sure you are all aware was designed by Robert Manby. It is more or less complete with just a few minor bits missing or broken and in reasonable condition despite sitting in a field for a number of years. I have not yet tried to start its Mini engine but it turns ok.

I wonder if any of you can advise me as to whether it is worth spending money and time on. I don't seem to be able to find other existing or running models and virtually no information or reference to them, although there are pictures of several on your site making me think these might just be library pictures.

I have been in touch with Harper Adams University College who did some devopment work on the model but the chap in charge has retired and despite trying to contact him have drawn a blank.

Any advice or information, ideas, comments, etc would be welcome.

Thanks in anticipation,
Ray

HELLO AND HELP Empty RTV

Post  red_leader Tue Jul 03, 2012 7:02 pm

Hello

I worked at Haper Adams while the RTV project was going on there.
Does you RTV have a Mini or Ford Escort engine.
When Robert Mandy started making them they were Mini based.
Latter when the design was sold to Lawrence Hawgood, from Church Stretton, they were Ford based.

Chris Westgate, also of the Scamp Club, has recently seen one on the south coast near Hastings.

Best wishes
Chris

HELLO AND HELP Empty RTV

Thanks Chris, it is Mini based so presumably an early one, automatic of course to allow the swivel between body and cab. As you were at Harper Adams perhaps you can tell me if the vehicle progressed into the current RTV vehicles produced by Kubota.
Cheers,
Ray.

Yes,welcome to the madhouse!!
The one on Ebay which was on sale in Rochdale ended up at the other end of the country in a village near Battle in East Sussex. As for it's value,I suppose it's the rarity thing and how much you are prepared to throw at it.Andrew Mclean, the current owner of the Scamp project has 2 RTV's,which,I presume, must be Mini based ones. One is good and one is,according to Andrew,a basket case.So from only knowing of one RTV,you now know of a further 3,they are unique and they did appear on telly in the eighties on Tomorrows World, there was also an article on one of the Southern TV shows. When I first started Scamping I remember there being 3 ready built RTV'S,at Robert Mandry's place in Ottershaw, ready to go their respective customers. They were sold as an on the road vehicle and I am told that the retail price back in the 80's was £8500.00,so quite an expensive bit of kit back then. What you have there is a rare beasty, and to those who knew it,unique, all the best with your project, and any help we can give on the forum, don't hesitate to ask.

HELLO AND HELP Empty RTV

Post  Raimondo Wed Jul 04, 2012 11:44 pm

Hi, thanks for the info. No I did not buy this one from eBay, did'nt even see that one but was'nt looking for one. This one came my way by chance.

I was undecided whether to sell it on as a project or refurbish it which sounds as though it might be worth doing if they are as rare as you suggest. I have got the V5 for it so should be little problem getting back on the road at some future time.

I will keep you informed of progress, refurb or sale.

Cheers,
Ray

I don't think, other than the name, there is a conncetion between your RTV and the Kubota

You are right Chris, the Kubota RTV just bears the same name,it has no connection with the Robert Mandry RTV,Kubota just knicked the name.Just like Ford did with Dutton and the name Sierra, the Dutton Sierra came before the Ford Sierra.
