Rob's refurb
Well now that my carport/garage has got a proper roof and i have filled in the other large holes its about time i pulled my finger out and started the refurb of my front suspension and driveshafts. I have superglued the cv gaiters for the last two MOTs and i dont think that the "man" will pass it again.
Like Tony I also have Hi/Lo's to fit, plus cv joints, wheel bearings and various bushes.
While i'm at it a bit of a paint job around the area.
The carport/garage area is only wide enough to do one side at a time. or is it practice on one side and hopefully get the second right.
I have also got and half fitted a blue pvc trailer cover which is going under my canvas top (which sags and leaks), well for this season anyway!
Oh well back to work tomorrow, at least on Saturday i can use the white spirit (or what evers in it) bath to clean my bits. There's nothing like a good scrub with a wire brush
More later Rob

On the other hand, sometimes the first side goes like a dream, and you get that feeling of "what was the problem, I can do it after all".
Until the second side brings you down to earth...

Re: Rob's refurb
Well after finally getting all the bits out and dismantled, the haynes book lied again "simply remove the cone from the doughnut" with the use of the works big engineers vice and club hammer, well i wasnt using the cone again anyway.
All the bits had a good wire brushing, a dust over with black and then a brush coat of dark blue. well i still had a bit left in the can.
Wednessday was fine so off i went from the top of Wolves around to the M5 J2 to go to Mini Spares. 30 mins later and B/card heavier by £200 ( no wife/partner/missus to placate) i went home again.
Fri on hol before Pub do on Sat it was time to start the rebuild. The old hub nut had come off without the gaiter and splined UJ drive, the new one with the gaiter fitted is a bigger diameter and will not fit through the subframe driveshaft oval hole. Eventually had to disconnect the bottom mount (passenger side) to get it in. Oh and yes i did drain the oil first!
The doughnut, HiLo went in and the top suspension arm with new knuckle joint.
All this work just because the cv gaiters were split (I had super glued them for the previous 2 MOTs), but when you break it all down to do the drive shafts, you are just as well to keep going as i dont intend doing it again.
Afternoons this comming week, can Rob get off his back to do a couple of hours in the morning before going to work...............watch this space,

Fitting hi/los
Well Rob, it sounds like your hi/lo fitting ent better than ours!
Jono kindly brought us the tool to borrow - didnt fit so he brought the bit with the other thread. - Still no joy - looked to see, on here, how you had done yours - Tony was a little worried about bringing in the heavy mob (lump hammer etc) So at this precise moment - mechanic friend at the ready - Colin on the phone - wonder what will happen next?!!!!

Re: Rob's refurb
Well i have had the last 4 days off 1X hol 3x rest day before starting 5 nights tonight.
Well the passenge side is all back together after splashing some paint around the subframe and wheel arches.
The new /refurbed bits went back in (its so much enjoyable working with clean parts) and after a bit of chicken n egg it was back onto its wheels and out of the garage to swop sides.
On Thurs after my monthly trip to the chiropractor (shoulder) and some lunch it was time to get at the other side.
Due to the end of my drive sloping down to the sloping road, the easiest way was to get the neighbour to shift her car of the ajoining drive and then do a 7 point turn to get it back into the garage.
Back in and the sun streaming in and warming me up the fun all started again.
I knew from last time that the top ball joint was seized on, so the lower one i managed to crack and the top one i was able to undo the locking cap and pull it all out of the hub. The lower arm seized on the wiggly sub frame pin but with some fiddling that also came out.
Friday pm was a case of getting my drill and angle grinder out to remove the tapered stubs of the ball joints from the arms.
*******Note for Tony*********
To get the cones off the doughnuts (thats if you dont want to keep the cones) i clamped the doughnuts in the workbench and hacksawed down between the rubber and the cone. when 3/4 around a few light taps with our mate the club hammer and the rusted cone ring came out of the doughnut. Well it worked for me and saved a lot of messing around.
Well i've had my lunch mand now its time to do some more painting of the wheel arches.
Tonight i will be putting my bits in the cleaning boasch and giving them a good scrub.
Then tomorrow start painting them up.
Amazing when i didnt have a roof on my garage it was raining, now i have its nice and sunny and warm by comparrison.
Keep at it Tony, you know it makes sense!!

Bob its a Scamp your doing not a Virgin train? all that lovely paintwork, someone's going give James a run for his money - perhaps a new trophy should be awarded for the best presented suspension and drive train (painted driveshafts that going a bit far isn't it)

Re: Rob's refurb
When I built mine, I got a gallon of silver Hammerite and painted just about everything under the bonnet. Now, 35 years later, I can soon tell which bits have never had to be replaced.
And I've still got about half a pint of rather thick paint left in the tin...

OMG!
That IS blue! Looks great though.
There is some effort going into the winter refurbs this year isn't there? I think 2009 is going to ba a golden year for Scamps for sure.

Looks even more sparkly in the flesh... i know it takes ages to get it off your nails. i dont use it to do my nails with....just hold a part while you spray it & voila several blue fingers.
I thought blue would go well with the yellow body colour. Glad i chose not to use my daughters favourite colours...Pink Body & purple accessories

Refurb & MOT
Well the running gear refurb is finally finished
and it has now got a new MOT on it, well 2nd time around
After stripping down the front suspension and driveshafts and spending £200 at Mini Spares (well i dont intend to do it all again), why didnt i spend £7.50 on a track rod end..Doh (thats all it failed on).
At the same time I fitted Hi/Lo's, now all i have to do is get used to how far i need to adjust them to get the difference between road running and what wil be needed for Stourport.
I also have picked up 5 alloys with 4 good tyres on them (2 need reseating or tubes) from E-bay for £52.50.These will get used on the road and the steels on the rear i can now put my knobblies on and swop front too back.
Have just done a road test on my favorite test track.......M54 J2-3 and back along the A5 and down the 449 into Wolves.
On the 27th i have got it booked onto a rolling road near Dudley to try and get some lower revs accelleration out of the donkey (or is that me an interface problem).
After that hopefully, it will be ready for the run down to Newquay and the Riviera Run on the May Bank Holiday.

Rolling Road
Well the last it for this year was done this afternoon.........rolling road set up!
www.aldonauto.co.uk Brierly Hill, sth of Wolves - nth of Stourbridge
Well after they changed the vacuum part of the dizzy, cause there wasnt much advance / retard happening and changed the carb needle for a better one is was time to thrash it. 5000 rpm the poor little sods only done 4000 when i've driven it
My engine is a 998 A+ and the end result was 51bhp at 4999 rpm at the fly wheel
Yes James and Reg, i know you wouldnt get out of bed for that rpm, but "its only a puppy" not a gert big rottie .
So hopefully i might manage to get up that bloody hill this year at the picnic
Now hopefully, i am all ready for the Newquay Riviera Run this weekend. Any one else going?

Re: Rob's refurb
I'm impressed with the BHP Rob and well done for using Aldon. Those lads know A-series backwards and how to set a car up on the rollers properly.
Pea originally had a low compression van engine 998cc = 37BHP! And 12" wheels. Still if you can drive a small underpowered car quickly then driving a bigger overpowered car (Sunbeam) can be done really quickly!!!
Standard 998cc minis were 44BHP? and 998cc A+ Metros were a little more. but 51 BHP from a engine that has been around a while is pretty respectable.

Lesson 42
Once you have done a run (20 miles to RR and back) i thought all was ok........not.
I thought the dicky battery just needed a good run to charge it up - !00 miles down to Swindon before Rivera Run in the dark and it looked ok .........next day on the way to Newquay whats that sulphorous smell.......well the alternator was over charging so we disconnected it and continued on the battery.
Mon am new battery (oh we have just run out of mini batts..doh) £70, tested the charging and the alt was not producing any thing..repaired a wire and still the same. Oh well down to Plymouth to see my sistersand in pm stripped down the alt (less than 2 years old) brushes ok put it back together, still knacked.
Tues am bro in law took me into plymouth to a back street type shop on main A38, he just does starters and alt, brill shop. Had a brand new alt, changed the pulley gap and thankyou very much for the £50.
Tues evening travelled up to Wolves, 200 miles in 3 1/2hrs. all ok or so i thought. The front tyres were bald for the outer 1/3rd (mutter mutter) .Part worn tyres on my alloys with 32mm spacers and stud extensions.
On way to work wed pm booked scamp in to get tracking done thurs pm. Thurs am thought i would put original steels back on front just to make sure it wasnt the alloys.
Wobble wobble the wheel bearing was loose!!!!!!!!!! Well i had really packed the bearings well with grease and gave the hub nut a good bollockin up, but sods law you can only go to the nearest splitpin hole.
Oh well roll it back in to the garage and go to work. I now have to get the hacksaw out to break into my sheds because i lost the keys when i cleared up after my refurb.
That was 500 miles and on the motorway ave 70 and got 28 miles to the gall
Do i win the prize for the best sob story of the year.

Re: Rob's refurb
Hard luck Rob - but I think you will have to do better than that! The year - or Scamping season is yet young - and several of us have had to remove engines and start again (2 diffs in the Peak district to my knowledge! ). I am sure more interesting poblems will also come to light over the following months.
They're not called Scamps for nothing!
Hope all is well with your Scamp again soon.

Oh Dear Rob,
It sounds like your 2009 is starting very much like everyone elses, two steps forward, three steps back.
On the upside though I think your Scamp has turned into a Lotus, you lucky sod!

Trouble
Usually
Serious
Oh, and Exiges are exempt from the above on the count of their nice reliable Toyota engines
