winch one? Empty winch one?

Post  Mutstar Fri Nov 05, 2010 10:20 am

Hi guys, I know nothing about off roading but I am under the impression that a winch is handy!

I already intended to fit one to stumpy just because of the nature of the beast but now that I'm seriously considering green laning in my little monster I would appreciate any thougts
I've been looking at 2000lb winchs but after some quick maths have worked out that with me and the car together we weigh in at about 2100lbs.

What sort of rated winches are you guys using?

Thanks

Don't forget to add the frictional resistance of the muddy clagg your stuck in into equation. I'm no mathmatitian but i bet you can double your original guestimate. Very Happy

If you recce the area first and know your limitations (you and the vehicle) a winch is not usually needed, you should not go offroading on your own anyway, a must is a high lift jack and a long tow strap with D shackles (suitably rated) these are useless unless you have suitable strong points on your vehicle to attach them to - good luck an happy Scamping santa

Thank you Martin and/or Nettie! I will still be getting a winch for my little scamp recovery vehicle but its nice to know its not a necessity! I think me and Mk1 Dave are going when his is up and running I wouldnt dream if going solo Neutral

Will be interesting to see how well two small engined scamps do and what difference the wheelbases make as his is SWB and mine is LWB

We certainly will be. I never had a winch on my land rover just a good tow strap and a high lift jack

Taz's winch is a.... haven't a clue!!!! We just bought it off fleebay! We have actually only used it once when green laning - but it did work!!!! As everyone says, TBH the highlift jack is probably THE best help Laughing

The problem with a winch is 1. new they are expensive 2. you need a good battery to power it. 3. you need something to tie the other end to. I think think Black & Decker used to do one that hooked over your tow ball, so you could use it at both ends (if you had a tow ball at the front) and it had a remote too - Steve Taylor (an ex pres) had one which worked a treat. If you do get the offroading bug then winches won't like to go swimming, a hi-lift (around £40 quid new) a bit of shuttering ply about a foot square (to put under your hi-lift to stop it dissapearing under the mud) and some reinforced points on the chassis front and back to jack and tow, and of course a few tinnies to give to your fellow Scampers for helping you get out of the clagg that no one else would go through. I have been there done that again and again, got the t-shirt etc have now hung up my D shackles and sold my off-road toy to fellow member Mr. Bingham who still has the mud bug.

Taz's winch has a remote so can be used from the drivers seat with the car in gear.
Water hasn't caused a problem with it yet - and Taz does not duck out of water (See the pictures!!!!)

As Tony says, the winch is really there for if he goes out on his own and gets stuck and there are no fellow scampers to help.

Thank you all for responses! I think I will be purchasing a winch and a high lift jack Laughing

Even if the winch is just to fit with the "recovery vehicle" theme
