Selecting a Gear Fault

Hi All, I'm after some assistance if possible.

Moo Mop has not moved by engine power for many years, however after spending some good hard hrs the engine is running lovely, however my next issue is the gearbox, when attempting to select a gear its extremely stiff and has no distinct location for gear, could this be due to any linkages / bushes below on the selecter arm?????, has anyone experienced or heard of something simular. I dont beleive the fault is with the gearbox (I hope).

Any answers would be very much appreciated.

Is that selecting a gear with the engine running or not

Both, no difference, there is no distictive movement in the gear stick, like stiring a bowl of extremely thick porridge

Best to remove the remote linkage and take the plate off the botton and clean it out and regrease it, and check the seal out the back of the gearbox - an old Scamp trick the recess will take two seals - its holding back a lot of oil.

Thx for the info, getting so close yet so far. If I remove the linkage can I select a gear without linkage in place using grips etc.

Yes you can. once you've disconnected the gear selector from the gearbox you'll be able to select gears by sliding a screwdriver through the hole in the shaft pokeing out of the gearbox (where the rollpin resides).

Another Scamp tip used by us hardened off roaders is to use a suitable bolt and nyloc nut in place of the roll pin, this makes it lot easier to drop the remote or take out the engine, unless you like lying on your back tapping out a roll pin with a suitable drift and then dropping it in the grass never to be seen again.

The simplest way to eliminate the gearchange is to disconnect it and select the gears from the rod coming out of the gearbox using a small phillips screwdriver in the roll pin hole,if it still seems stiff it may be that the detent or detent ball sleeve has got stuck and may need freeing off,if I remember rightly it is behind the offside driveshaft seal housing.Another thing I have just thought of is the bottom pan on the remote gearchange,has it been put back the correct way?Hope this is of some help
